Hey folks, not sure if anyone has watched the new survival program on History Channel called Alone. Don't watch much TV (other than baseball) but this show actually has me interested.

Anyway, nearly all the contenders chose to bring an axe and was wondering which particular axe you guys would choose to bring in the same situation/environment (Vancouver Island).

I'm pretty sure I noticed a few Gransfors Bruks on the show but couldn't tell exactly which model. One of the contenders, Joe Robinet, whom I sometimes watch his youtube channel, posted this a few days ago discussing the items he chose to bring on the show. He talks about his axe near the end of the video...

Since they drop you in with little walking, I would go big but not too big, a vintage 3lb Plumb double bit on a 28" haft.

Haha, yea i saw the first two episodes. seems ok, at least better than the other crap shows on all the time. I know a saw an GB American Felling Axe and I think at least one Scandinavian Forest axe. Funny thing though, the guys on the show all seem like they are real softies. Definitely not guys with any real experience or background in the woods, imo. I like the show honestly though so far. The guys are so scared of bears and wolves though, its pretty comical. I've been in the woods sleeping more than a couple times with bears lurking so close you feel their breath through the tent. Pretty intense, but I wouldn't be crying and tapping out because of it.

I think that show may cause a rise in GB axes though....

Well I like the Les Stroud aspect of the show being that there are no producers or camera crew out there with these guys; its just them. And I don't know if I would call them all "softies". Some of these guys like Joe Robinet, Mitch Mitchell, and Wayne Russell have their own youtube channels and I've watched a bunch of their stuff and I can tell you that they are not rookies when it comes to being out in the woods. I've learned quite a few cool bushcraft techniques by watching some of those videos to be honest.

Well, yea I like the fact there are no camera crews. And, honestly I meant to read up a bit about these guys, I had no idea they actually had YT channels. I stand corrected. I just kind of figured that based on the first two episodes so maybe I was off there. The first guy that tapped out though, come on, lol. It looked like a couple of young bears just checking out the guys camp, and he cries and leaves the show the first day. And now the second guy I had a little hope for but after he tapped out because he saw "3 coyotes way up on the ridge" of some hill that was like a mile away or something? I don't know. I like the show, and find it pretty cool and entertaining and in fact I told a lot of people about it. Not to mention it has got to be hard to go out there and do it all while setting up the four cameras that each of them get to film it all.

Like I said, I like the show, just seemed kinda funny seeing the first two guys tap out so fast when i thought all these guys were "wilderness experts," lmao. Just my opinion. Darn, I wish it was on right now....

Yeah I get what you're saying. I kinda think that's another cool aspect of the show too though...the environment and the wildlife on Vancouver Island is going to weed out the "weaker" ones pretty fast and as the show goes on we'll find out who really has the most grit.

There's a big thread over in the Wilderness & Survival section about this show to help you get by in between episodes... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1293206-New-TV-Survival-Show-Alone

I would bring my 1.2kg Agdor over my Scandinavian forest axe.
The Hults Bruk got a little longer handle and a little more weight to it, I also think that the pattern of my Agdor is better suited for the job!

I would have to say I would bring my CRKT woods chogan. It's a tomahawk that weighs a little over 2 pounds overall on a 19" handle. Can do a lot of things with the handle removed.

I know which ax I would want, no idea how to get one though. My dad has this medium sized ax he picked up from a barrel at a general store somewhere in western canada. According to him it was the kind of place where there is an old wood stove with a bunch of old guys drinking coffee and telling lies. An old Indian picked the ax out for him out of the barrel and its been in use ever since. Fantastic ax, better story, and I have no doubt none of its true. But that's the kind of ax I'd want.
