After doing some hiking this weekend with my wife and son in the Smoky Mountains in Tn.they have decided that they would like to go backpacking with me this fall and winter.I need to find packs to fit them now.My wife is about 5'5" about 100#,my son is only 7 years old.I would prefer internal frame. My son would only be carrying his sleeping bag and other lightweight items so it need's to be a very small pack to fit him well.Do any of you have any idea's.Place's to look maybe?Thank's.

Since your son may continue the habit, and is probably growing like a weed, maybe consider a day pack for him. A large(ish) one will carry his weight limit now and can serve in its intended role when he grows into a more expensive and capable pack in a few years.

The REIs near me all have weighted and stuffed bags next to the packs so you or your wife can try a pack in the store, loaded as it would be on the trail.

Try Northern Mountain Supply. They sometimes have some great deals on all kinds of equipment. I got a K2 Longbed external frame backpack for less then 1/2 price. It helps if you have been to a sore or two, and know what you are looking for, and the size. If you are going to any real backpacking, then your backpack needs to fit right. Good luck!

Do what I did. Lay hold of a big wad of cash and march into REI to be fitted, in person, by a competent salesperson.

Having a quality pack fitted to you totally rocks. After 3 years and several campouts, I am still d@nged happy.

Mail order, no.
In person, si.
