I really want the Filson Rucksack, it's tan with leather straps and is supposed to be really tough. I found a place that sells them for $173 U.S and thats about the cheapest so far. Does anyone else have one of these or something similar. If so do you like it or is there something better.

Mate, not to rain on your parade, but I'm certain you can do much better for your
hard earned dollar than Filson's backpack. Consider that now matter what you think
now your needs and lifestyle will change over the years. Why not buy a more
serviceable backpack for less money and be fiancially able to adjust your carry
needs over the years rather than have a $ 100 + pack that lays in the closet.

It all comes down to a basic prinicpal. Nothing last forever and ALL things
change. Be able to change with them.;)

get the Filson...the price is great...they kick ass
and look better with age...they make a statement
and you will come to love it as a reliable friend.
You won't regret it ever...yes life changes and your
Filson rucksack will too...it will keep getting better
and better over the years!!! Go for it!!!!

Depending on your needs..., I have to agree with yardboy on this one. There are certainly better all-purpose packs for less money..., but the Filson is one major class act!

If you are a Force Recon Marine..., forget it....lol.., but for something that just gets better over time..., the price you're looking at is very good!

Following some advise here a year or so ago, I bought the Filson. It
is everything I could hope for. I use mine as carry on when I'm checking thru my baggage and it has gone to my boat on weekends since I got it.

The other people are right, this wll get better with age.

i have a filson briefcase and my wife has a tote. we both love our bags and they have stood up to extreme wear and abuse VERY well. the brass zippers cannot be beat, the seams are bombproof, and the material does get better looking w/ age. not to mention the leather is top of the line.
i say go for it. the bag will stand anything you ask of it and will become a welcome friend. tightwad has a point but thats something youll have to decide. personally, id spend the $200 bucks for my briefcase again in a heartbeat.
if you buy it make sure to post a review after a few months of using it.

Good Evening Everyone-

Bigtree, you'll want to analyze your needs before deciding one way or the other. Filson is a well-respected, old-line company for outdoor gear. Their garments (especially wool coats) have been true classics. Their oilskin coats are perfect if you have to push through heavy, prickered brush for hunting or ranching.

Now, as far as the bags go, the combination of heavyweight canvas and leather is not at all practical if you're planning to scale mountains and do minimalist, high-speed hiking with specialized gear. There are many more manufacturers that will satisfy this demand with packs with lots more technological innovations and ease-of-use features.

If the bag will be used for backpacking as well as weekends on East Hampton or Martha's Vineyard, or as an airplane carry-on, then the Filson is a fine choice. Do you want to bring it into the office on Casual Fridays every now-and-again? The Filson would be a good choice for that, too.

Good luck with your decision.

I have two Filson pieces; the regular size briefcase, and the XL outfitter (?) bag... the one with the separate zippered compartment on the bottom for your boots and wet stuff. These are simply the best you can buy. They are "bullet-proof" tough, and age nicely. I guess that I wouldn't buy the rucksack if you are intending it for hiking where weight etc. is a major concern. Where I would use it is for a backpack for school, a carry on luggage piece, maybe even a BOB for your vehicle. Filson = top quality. Filson stuff is addicting. You can't have just one hat/shirt/coat/bag. I haven't bought anything Filson in quite awhile, but that's because I've been buying knives!:D
Good luck, and get the Filson

In all fairness, I wondered if a Filson pack could be bought for less than
retail. That would make it a good .......investment. To me a good investment
equals a cost avoidance which give me more money later. :)

Considering Filsons quality a pack from them would qualify as an investment
that might yield use dividends for years to come. So I went to E-bay to find if
Filson's can be bought there. As you might guess they are and the prices are
, suprize -suprize, cheaper. But not to much cheaper. From what I've seen about
$50 average is what you'll save but hey, $ 50 buck is not bad. So give e-bay
a try to cut your cost and good luck:D

I've been on ebay and saw some good stuff but not the rucksack yet,but there are some good prices on there. When I finally get one I will let you all know what I like about it or whats not to like, but I think it will be awesome.:D
