I know this question is asked a lot lol. I been searching I am not sure how long to find out. I have been to the state site to see laws and all it says is I can only pack a pocket or a hunting knife. It does not explain what a pocket knife is.Some people say it counts as a pocket knife others dont. do any of you pack them in Ky? if not is there anybody I can contact to find out? I dont want to listen to some people who say no and never pack mine or listen to some who say yes and go to jail lol. Thanks Nitelion!

Kentucky Case law has found balisongs to be deadly weapons and thus not ordinary pocket knives or hunting knives. Even without the case law, I can tell you that no officer or court would consider them to me "ordinary pocket knives." They are almost always interpreted as weapons, and you'd never convince an officer that you were carrying it for utility.

So no, it is not legal to carrying a balisong in KY.

And just a bit of helpful advice:

Since you're using the word "pack" to describe carrying a knife, it sounds a lot like you fully intend to carry one as a weapon. I'll leave aside the debate about how well knives can function in a self-defense role, but I will tell you that carrying a knife for that purpose can get you in a world of trouble. If you tell an officer you're carrying a knife for self-defense, you'll probably face weapons charges. If you carry a knife that looks like it was designed as a weapon, you'll probably get charged for carrying a deadly weapon under KY law (they've got the Case law to back it up). If you ever do use a knife in self-defense, you'll become the defendant and have to prove beyond reasonable doubt that your actions were justified. Plenty of times people have stabbed someone in so-called self-defense and the original victim ended up with a prison sentence. Even just pulling out a knife to deter an attack (often called "brandishing") can and probably will get you in trouble.

Reading your posts here, you seem kind of young and/or immature. Sorry if that seems a bit blunt, but I'm trying to keep you out of trouble here. If you're that concerned about your personal safety, get some pepper spray. Police and courts will be a lot more understanding about that. If just think it sounds cool to carry a balisong around in your pocket and/or you're harboring fantasies of pulling it on some punk that tries to mug or attack you, then you'll need to adjust that way of thinking.

Again, I'm sorry if I'm mistaken in my interpretation of your intentions, but your desire to "pack" a balisong really makes it seem like you're just interested in carrying a weapon.

I guess I did word it wrong. It's not for self defense at all other than maybe a dog or something. It's for edc. I live out in the country and im all ways outside using a knife for something and I forget to take it out of my pocket before I go to town or its with my phone and wallet and just a habit to grab it. do you mind if I ask witch post? I can not remember any of my past post other than the where can I buy a kimura, tape my blade,or asking about a starter bali. Thanks Nitelion. And o yea thanks for letting me know it was very helpful!

In that case, I apologize for my assumptions.

In general, I've found that people who tend to use "lol" a lot or else use a lot of text message speak on a forum (stuff like "o i c" instead of "oh, I see) tend to be younger. It worries me posts written like that discuss weapons because, if the person really is young, it can screw up the rest of his or her life. A misdemeanor is one thing, but in some places weapons charges can get you a felony conviction and that would make it really difficult to find a job or get into a good school.

If you just need a good EDC, something like a SAK or Spyderco Delica would probably be a good choice since their blades are smaller and thus more likely to be interpreted as an ordinary pocket knife in KY. Local laws me be more restrictive, though, so you'd also want to know what your town/city has to say about knives.

Actually, it is legal to carry a butterfly knife, so long as it is open carried, but if you try to conceal it you need to have a ccdw license
