I will be visiting Australia. I want to bring a balisong trainer, but I'm not sure if it's legal. Does anybody know? I've tried looking for information online, but there doesn't seem to be any. =/ And what are the odds of someone going through my luggage and finding it anyway?

I will be visiting Australia around Christmas time. I want to bring a balisong trainer as a christmas present for someone that I know, but I'm not sure if it's legal. Does anybody know? Perhaps your best bet would be to check with a sensei (teacher) at a reputable martial arts school located in the city or town where your friend lives (especially a Filipino MA school, because they use balis). They may know more about the law and how it is actually enforced than the police.

When I went to australia as a tourist a few years ago Customs check was pretty heavy. If they saw anything the least bit suspicious on x-ray they would open all your bags and do a thorough search. They're serious about stopping ecological threats from entering (foreign bugs, seeds etc) so they take their customs pretty seriously. One of my buddy's even had a swiss army knife taken off of him because he didn't declare it.

So if it is against the law there's a good chance that they will find at confiscate it.

I'm in Canada and balisongs are illegal, stores won't ship them here. Trainers, however, are legal and stores will sell them up here. I've had one get inspected at customs and it got through. I realize our laws may differ slightly, but it should be perfectly legal. It's not a knife, therefore knife laws should not apply to it. definition of a knife is: edged tool used as a cutting instrument; has a pointed blade with a sharp edge and a handle. no sharp edge+no point= not a knife. it's more of a toy or dexterity building tool than it is a "weapon".

It is legal because a trainer doesn't have a blade. Basically, you are carrying around a piece of rotating metal

Is a practice training knife legal (from the ones with the round knives that rnt knives)

As long as it matches up with the new guidelines you should be fine, however if its a trainer version of an illegal knife (knuckle duster, balisong, or switchblade) it might not. They may consider it the same as a replica, which then might still be outlawed. Someone who knows more about how australia views replicas might be able to help more.
