Does anyone remember those ads in the backs of magazines that were selling knives? One that always intrigued me was a long thin folder they called a "banana knife." Does such a blade still exist? Nothing fancy or high end here, obviously.

Case used to make one. I tried to find a current model on their website and failed.

Are they for harvesting bananas? I have bananas in my yard and have never figured out a good blade shape for cutting individual hands off the bunch.

I think your thinking of what's most commonly known as a melon tester.

If so you can still get them from rough rider for around $10.

Not sure what you are thinking of. There was a knife that was commonly termed a "banana trapper". Standard trapper blade shapes, but longer.
The one on the bottom of the pic below is 5 1/2" closed. It's a Camillus-made Remington.

Im not a trapper guy, but the color on these are all great.

Btw I really think this probably has to be a melon tester, maybe they were just known as banana knives in his area.

It does sound like OP is looking for a melon tester, because his description doesn't match actual "banana knives", which are hooked like these:

I noticed that when I googled banana knives.

I did however see a melon tester advertising knife with the name of a banana company on the side.

From the OP's description I wonder if he means those yellow folding fishing knives. They were found in ads towards the back of magazines and in just about every rusty tacklebox. I believe they were made by Case, Camillus as well as a handful of other brands with the knives made in Germany and Japan. Might be way off on this...but it does look like a "banana"..lol
