This knife is selling very cheap at my local hardware after never giving it a second look and after reading up on this forum it actually may be a good knife. Has anyone removed handle scales? I would like a home made handle and sheath if i get it

Welcome. You read around here and that led you to believe it may be a good knife? Because it seems to be the single most disliked knife around here.

Maybe I have been misreading things...

I'd never pay for anything that has that d-bags name on it! I don't care if it's unobtainium. Don't support that fake phony fool. That's just my opinion tho

Yes i have been reading the posts for a while. The concensus seema that the pro version is not a bad knife. If i could take the scales with bg off i would make a set and have a resonable blade for the sale cost. Also i like making leather sheatha so all my knivea get a homemade sheath whether i make the knife or buy it. I dont wish to come across as a knife maker or mountain man i just tinker around for stress release. The biggest game i dress is a steak or chop

Meh, it's not a bad knife. Much as I hate to encourage Gerber to keep manufacturing that stuff, if you can get the pro cheap, <$40, why not? Would be neat to see one fully customized. Hell, you could do Gerber a favor and show them what they SHOULD be making. Any more than $35-40 though and there are better knives to be had.

Some of the stuff Gerber makes in Portland is actually pretty decent. The multitools and the few knives made from S30V and 154CM are decent. The LMFII (at least one version) is being made with 154CM and it comes in around the $80-$100 mark.

We have sure come a long way. When i. Was a kid i jad a 10dollar rambo survival knife. My cadet sgt made me take it off my webbing when he saw me. Carry it on my first excursion. Told me if he ever saw it again it would end up in the bottom of the river. Now that was thirty years ago. The gerber knivea that get knocked are a hell of alot better than those 10us dollar knives. I wonder what 10dollars in 1984 money equals today

If the knife is very cheap, then, why not? It would make a great beater and I would not even change the "scales".

Not every thing with BG's name on it is bad, just much of it. I have a hatchet I am really happy with.

With inflation, $10 in 1984 money would be worth about $1.98 today.

I don't know how you figured this would be the case. $10 in 1984 has the same buying power as $22.77 in 2015 dollars. This is according to the BLS inflation calculator.

Hell, why not...only if it's cheap enough.

Personally, I'd ditch the handle, give it a good leather or paracord wrap and clip it to my pack as a throwaway.....

well 50dollars today can get you a much better knife than back in the day then?

With the improvements in blase steels, locking mechanisms, handle materials etc since "back in the day," whenever that was, that question doesn't really make sense.

How much was a buck 119 special in 1984? Or a similar hardwarw store knife?

If you want the Bear Grylls because you have gotten the impression. somehow, that it is a good knife, then go ahead and get it. Its not going to explode on you or anything.

If it was over 15 bucks, I, personally would pass. There are MUCH better knives in that price range (Mora, Opinel, for example).

I certainly wouldn't spend the time and money rehandling it and making a sheath for it.

But hey, your money, time, and knife. I just think one can do better.Just like your cadet Sgt.

My youngest wanted the BG Compact Fixed Blade... seen it at the store. He loves it, which is fine with me.

It was cheap. Has good ergos with rubber handle, sheath works, orange color is easy to spot.

It's full tang, the steel is okay, Chinese 440A-ish stuff but it's built beefy enough to beat on.

And that's the entire purpose... buy it for peanuts, beat on it without guilt, and replace it (or NOT!) if it ever gives up or disappears.

If you like the Bear Grylls ultimate pro then take a look at the Gerber Strongarm. It's available in plain edge, has an excellent sheath and is made in the USA. Plus it doesn't have BG all over it. A possible down side is that it is 420HC steel. So far mine has held up very well and has for all the tests I've seen of it on YouTube. They can be had for around $50-60.
