Well I am trying to get more into sharpening. I got a sharpmaker a while back, but it isn't the best thing and I also picked up a Gatco Pro kit thingy (forgot the name). The gatco is a step in the right direction I think, though i want a worthwhile setup. I am thinking about getting DMT Diasharp benchstones and was hoping somebody could tell me their thoughts on them or offer an alternative. This would be a complete replacement, xcoarse/coarse to xfine.

Does the size really help when going from 6x2 to 8x3? The price is twice as much and considering I'd be buying a bunch it adds up. Well that is it for now, thanks for your help.

sounds like the course or extra course dmt is all i would get combined with what you allready have. i dont know if i would replace what you have with dmts," doesnt make sence to me", however the bigger the stone the better.

Maybe you are right. The kit I have could use more on the higher end, eg extra fine/extra extra fine. The Sharpmaker is good for travel and so is the Gatco, though neither is smooth enough and/or provides the ease of sharpening on that end that I would like from them. I think I will try out the diasharp double stuffed lol, with fine and extra fine assuming that is an option. 2x6 should be sufficient and provide a good test of their products.

i would disagree concerning the sharpmaker; however for travel i would use my dia-folds over anything else. you will find skill gets you farther then the equiptment.

Well an update is in order. I went to the only Woodcraft in NY and picked up a couple of Duosharps. So far they are very nice to use and make things much easier. I have plenty of options now luckily. If I need something for the road/camping/hiking, I have just the thing. I am home and going to sharpen things I have the Duosharps and if I want something in between for long vacations somewhere or need a last minute gift lol, I have the Gatco. Still might get a Diasharp, extra fine maybe. For now I will enjoy the great setup I have. Thanks for the info in any case.

I use a DMT coarse to establish my angle and form a burr, then I switch to a med. Spyderco alumina ceramic, and then I follow up with a fine Spyderco alumina ceramic. I have a complete set of DMT stones but rarely use them, the Spydercos are much smoother and produce amazing results. That's my personal preference, and I think some others use it too.

As for higher price:

6*2 = 12 square inches

8*3 = 24 square inches

I agree. I really like my Duosharps, though I still want something smoother since the 1200 grit side is good but could be smoother. Personal preference it seems.
