Becker 39.... a tad disappointed

So I recently purchased a BK14. Was really impressed and purchased a BK16. Still impressed I decided on the BK39. Just recieved it today and the tip was rusted. It actually looks as though it's under the coating.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice knife, but I cannot get past the rusted tip after spending good money for the knife.

The real bummer is the BK39 is discontinued and the place I purchased has no more. I cannot find it anywhere else.

So...do I live with it and/or try to fix it? Return it and just get a BK9? Any suggestions?

I'm afraid I will have to send it back. After having such high hopes with Becker from the 14 and 16, this was a big let down.

I wish I could but it's under the clear coat.

I'm probably being a baby about it, but dang after spending 100 bucks on a new knife you would think it be without flaw.

Why not strip it and sand it out yourself, while your at it customize your handle

I'm actually soaking the top in penetrating oil. See if that helps. I'm sure it will disappear with use. It's just the principle I guess.

The handles were never going to be on there very long. Micarta is a must.

I agree with the others, just use it, and it'll go away. That said, I still don't blame you. When I spend money on something, I expect it to be just right.

Strip the tip, probably with acetone. Steel-wool the rust off. Paint it again with clear nail polish.

agreed, annoying to have a flaw like that on a new piece, but it's really just a little tarnish. The coating wears with use anyway, and being clear you should have something handy to re-coat it anyway if you want.

Problem solved. Chopped some wood and now it has some character to go along with the tip. Lol

Guess she is mine now. Ugly or not. [emoji1]

 In my personal opinion; Becker's look the best after you've beaten on them for a good while. They are meant to be used, if it was a safe queen / collector piece; then I would gripe about the imperfections.

Let us know your impressions after you've played with it a bit ;)

Use that bad boy and let it earn its service stripes.

I too would be annoyed but Ethan and KaBar really stand behind their products better than any other that I am familiar with.

The BK39, to me, is an excellent knife.

Use it in good health.

The main thing is that you are happy in the end ... and it appears as though you are. Cheers!

First impressions:

I honestly wasn't sure about the 9, but was convinced from all the positive reviews. So I figured, let's give it a try. After handling it I can certainly see the appeal. Just my opinion, but it's a knife that could potentially stand on its own.

I will give it a good work out soon, slap some micarta on it, and call her good.

Outside of the quality control issue I am as pleased with it as I am my other two Beckers.

people beat me to it but i was going to say "just stab it into some wood a few times"

steel rusts. if the vendor let that sit on a shelf for a few months, stuff can happen. don't blame KaBar. blade the vendor...

enjoy the knife

I am by no means a metal expert. However, the metal was rusted under the coating. Which tells me it was there when it was coated. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. If it were on the exposed edge, sure. Not under the coating, which is put on the metal to prevent rust in the first place. Either way it's a done deal. I chipped the coating away and took care of it.

well, the coating extends to the edge, yah? ever see rust bubble on a car? they weren't there when the car was painted...

try to imagine: factory fresh knife, just got off tumble and grind, and it's shiny. hit the paint. still shiny. when could it rust?

i have had a lot of knives get tip damage or rather, the box is dropped, and the tip is point down, and it can get scuffed. sometimes they come out the box some. sometimes they even hit metal or concrete; the paint is a suggestion, not a permanent guaranteed solution to not rusting. a single scratch or void or edge condition (like from sharpening), and moisture can wick up there. ideal conditions for rust really.

a custom knife is less likely to have this, because the guy that made it is eyeballing the thing on the way out. once out of his hands though...

with the factory, i'd be willing to guess 99.99% that the knife was perfect. how long was it sitting in a moist environment or a storage container or out on a shelf, maybe some clerk stabbed a pallet and put it back. maybe it got handled and got wet. hard to tell. same happens with cars. brand new cars. $60,000 BMWs! rust.

stuff happens.

just be assured though, that likely, if it was REALLY actually bad, KaBar would have taken care of it.

I was clearing some willow tree sprots hiking out of a creek on my hike today and there was a old piece of wire fence in the sprots that I whacked several times before I realized It was there. Put some tiny miner nicks on my blade edge.

So tonight I did a good resharpen to remove the nicks. Its razer sharp again. I havent had to really shapen my 9 yet except a run on a 1000 grit ceramic stone once before. Stone I used tonight was about a fine grit 240 grt, plenty fine for this user 9.
This kabar 1095 cro-van is good stuff ! Holds a edge great...
