So, the "cheaper" stonewashed option is 280€. The more expensive DLC option is whooping 325€. Steel is S35VN.
And 1095CV BK2 is 160€ here.
So that's at least twice the price of the original that's already overpriced. Sure, you get better micarta scales and arguably better sheath.
So is it 2x better knife?
And is it worth it?
It is a thick pry bar style knife like the original. Yeah it batoned gnarly wood in one video and yeah it held the edge better. I'm not gonna comment chipping when shot by pellet gun as that's not real world use.
How much does a person to buy BK2 style knife care about edge retention? At that edge thickness any steel will be fairly tough and neither will cut particually well.
Despite thick obtuse edge, if you abuse it, it can and will take damage. S35VN is not known to be brittle, but it's not known for toughness either. So how easy would it be to fix the edge damage? How easy would it be to restore the edge once it inevitably does go dull?
BK2 was known for toughness. If they made the version in 3V/4V or CruWear it'd be well in line with legacy of that knife, and it'd sell like hot cakes. And imagine the Magnacut version...
But no, they went for S35VN. OK, it's stainless. It is arguably well rounded. But still, why not Magnacut?
How important is corrosion resistance to average customer looking at edged pry bars?
I got my AK47 field knife in 3V for 150€ years ago, and today within same price you can buy Boker Bronco, Benchmade Leuku and Puukko - all also in 3V.
I think that they could make much bigger impact on the market if they went for tough steel such as 3V instead of S35VN. Or if they kept the prices in range of sanity.
No matter from what angle I look at it, I cannot find large part of this market that would be interested in that knife.
