Ok, so this month's skill is trapping:thumbup:
I finished my three for Ethan's contest but I want to do more. There is a foot of snow on the ground and more falling. If it stops tomorrow I will finally get to set my traps. In the mean time I'm indoors, which sucks because there's not much trap practice that I can do indoors that will really entertain me. I decided to try my hand at a new trap. John (Rescue Riley) sent me a link to a Tilong rat trap that looked really cool so I decided to make one. I didn't have any bamboo wide enough in the house to make the trap full size so this first one is gonna be a mouse trap instead.

Here are the raw materials, along with my Eskabar

Step one, notch around the bamboo so it breaks cleanly and then use the tip of the Esky to drill two holes for a loop of string that will anchor the back of the toggle

Step two, use tip of knife to make two more holes behind the loop. These holes will eventually be for the killing noose. Then cut a rectangular notch behind the noose holes

The first pic shows the toggle and the second shows the trigger and the third shows the trap set but the noose is not installed yet. This is just to show the trigger mechanism.

The bottom of the trigger is the bait stick. It extends deep into the trap and will be smeared with bait like peanut butter on the back side

Now install the killing noose through the holes drilled earlier.

Slip the noose around the toggle and set the trap as before. The trap is now armed.

This is a vid showing the whole trap. Its very dark but I'll make a better one tomorrow.

Excellent job there mate! Though I was hoping for explosions! :D

Sorry, I'm stuck indoors and my wife got REALLY mad the last time there was an explosion in the house! Seriously, I was sleeping on the couch for three weeks and the repairs cost over $2000

how is it the guy always sleeps on the couch? geez ;)

i had someone try that nonsense, and i just packed up my shit and left (wasn't my house, long drive, but it was worth it); no respect on the couch dog house, but plenty for standing my ground and leaving quietly :)

yeah, but I blew up a room and made the news VERY BAD DAY
Sleeping on the couch was the least of my worries.

a good woman would've comforted you for your trauma for having a bad day ;)

also, couches are bad for the back.

"sorry honey, got a crick in my back, i can't mow the lawn today, or you know, take out the trash, or go shopping with you, pass me the muscle relaxants, you have a good day, could you bring me a beer and some subs too, on your way out? i think i need to see the chiropractor..."

Okay, let me explain just a bit. She's my wife now, not then.
It was also a room in HER apartment which almost caused her eviction. I was able to pay cash immediately for repairs which kinda saved it in the end but it was a very bad situation. Eight years later she ended up marrying me, go figure. I set up a loading desk for a match and a static spark ignited about an eight of a pint of powder. She was also very anti-gun back then and hated my issued weapons and range time. That was until I bought her a .22 pistol six years ago. She took to it in just a few minutes, ended up buying an annual range permit and even shooting at lunch time. She shoots a 9mm XDm in Sil and out scores most of the men at the shoots.

That is cool! How do people come up with this stuff? I never would have though of doing anything like that. I guess it comes with practice and skill;)

Can you post the link you got from your buddy? Are there other traps on it?

Nice work! I've seen these in The Philippines but I've never tried making one. Need to find some bigger bamboo.

That's a fairly complex and advanced trap. It's amazing what "primitive" people can come up with. I certainly never would have come up with this on my own.

Nice !!
No bamboo.
Use PVC !!

yes, exactly, use PVC, use steel wire/cable :) use a fiberglass rod for the spring, or whatever :) home despot or whowes has all that i bet.

For anyone that doesn't have bamboo- this guy makes a great Tilong with a tin can and surgical tubing.

You think those things will catch squirrels also? I carry a tin can like that in my kit for boiling water and I guess if needs be I could make one of those. :D I'm gonna try that one soon me thinks.

Yes, a squirrel is no different to kill than a rat, just make sure both the cordage and spring stick are strong enough to kill the squirrel quickly.
I don't think it would ever be a good idea to use your water can to make a trap. Food is far down on the survival priority list but water is always important. I think that cutting holes in your water can to attempt to catch a small game animal would be counter productive to survival. Just my opinion.

Please do make one though:thumbup: they are very cool traps that you don't see often and the more people making and posting this stuff the better the chance that the skills will stick around!

I'm going to give this trap a shot and see how it does. I will make sure the cordage and spring mechanism is strong enough to kill the critter quickly. Thanks for the encouragement

I also carry a SS water bottle. And that is a good point; water before food. :)
