Beer barel scales

I just received a beer barel stockmann. Do I need to do anything special to preserve the scales?

From what I understand these barrels are aged oak. I don't believe they need any sort of special treatment. I read somewhere of someone who coated theirs with some sort of wood sealant/polyurethane, but in my opinion that would completely take away from the unique texture/feel of the knife.
