i posted this in the boker sub forum but there seems to be little traffic over there. I just received my first boker beer barrel stockman. The scales seem very dry. Is there anything I need to do to properly take care of the scales.

Congrats on the purchase, it's a sweet knife!

I have a Boker beer barrel Copperhead and it's scales were also a bit dry when I received it. I gave it a nice coating of Tung oil when I first received it and it seemed to respond very well to it. Lately I've moved to a 10:1 mix of Tung oil and Tsubaki/Camellia oil since I have some pre-mixed on hand and it responded just as well to that. I live about .5 miles from the beach so this is about the worst possible environment for an unfinished, natural wood scaled knife with carbon steel blade and I think it still looks great. I even went a month or two without oiling the blade and only ended up with a couple of pepper spots.

I live a couple of blocks from the bay. Did yours have a mirror finish when new?
