belt buckle knife?

Years ago I saw an ad in a gun magazine for a belt buckle knife. Single edged. Sort of gotta hold it like a punch dagger I guess. So, does anyone have one, and what are your impressions of it?
Also, I wonder if airport security checks belt buckles for this sorta thing. Although, I doubt anyone will ever successfully hijack a plane with just knives. The passengers would just mob the hijacker(s), and probably kick the snot out of em to boot (with boots). All knives can be legally carried here (except autos), concealed or openly. I thought this might be a good extra knife, and I need a new belt anyway.

They are great I have tried many and the best I have found so far are made by Bowen. Yes airport security will take them and you will probably miss your flight because of it. I say that because about a month ago I lost mine and missed my flight. I wasn't tryin to smuggle it in just forgot about it.

Texas-T,
Yes, that is exactly the one, I had fogotten the maker. How does the belt stay on (and pants up) when the knife is being used?

Anybody know what steel is used in these things?

Can't speak for Bowens in particular, but in general the actual functional part of the buckle(that holds the belt closed/up) acts as a sheath for the knife. In other words, the knife is just an addition to the buckle, it isn't the whole buckle itself.

Actually the belt is the sheath for the knife so if it's being used the belt hangs open. Also the bckle can be used for a bottle opener. I guess as far as pants staying up my only suggestion would be to wear tighter fitting pants. This is a knife that I use strictly as a back up last resort type of thing although it's very sturdy and well made I prefer to not advertise that I have it. I will be ordering another one soon, and this time I'll take it off before I fly.

Texas,
Thanks for your answers. I just checked out the website, it's bowenknife.com for those who wanna check it out. I would only use it as a self-defense sort of thing, not utility. I would still carry my EDC's. Maybe after my hunting trip, right now gotta save the $$$.

Concealed belt-buckle knives are a big no-no at airports.

I have to lift my shirt and flip over my belt buckle every time I beep. I'm sure that any sort of concealed weapon would be seen by the wand-people.

Manowar: Advise against the belt buckle knife in the airport. If you get past security, it is a felony.

If you are up for a belt buckle knife for other reasons check Dan Valois, he has a good selection

I also have a Valois belt buckle knife. He offers a selection of buckles and belts that are very attractive. The buckle stays in place when you draw the blade so your pants don't fall down. He also makes blades with titanium that will pass through security.
manowar669: You mentioned that hijackers couldn't do it with just knives. I believe the 9/11 hijackers were armed only with boxcutters. (Of course if other passengers were carrying their own bldes, things might have been different.

I also recommend the Valois belt knives. He offer several options and styles and the quality is superb. Most importantly you can draw the knife and the belt stays in place so your pants don't fall down.

They are not only a big no no in airports, but the state of California says that they are illegal and considered the same as a switchblade and you will be charged with a gross misdemeanor (3 of them makes a felony). But if you want one I just saw an add in the latest Blade mag from C.A.S. knives www.casiberia.com , with a belt buckle knife called the "Slider - 2027 - GT" pictured on the back cover.

As for how will your pants stay up when using the knife, I think that the knife pulls out of the frame of the buckle leaving the majority of the buckle in place and still holding up your pants.

And Yitz, the titanium will only go through the walk through magnetic detectors, if you are taken aside and the wand is used on you, they will find a titanium knife. The wand looks at density of material and can distinguish from human flesh and titanium (or other supposedly undetectable materials).

Thanks for all the replies. I had NO intentions of going into an airport with ANY knife these days. I was just curious as to whether security was checking belt buckles or not. The thought of some guy grabbing my belt buckle to check it is a little too close to the groin for comfort for me. I haven't flown since '93.

Heh, I wouldn't mind if it's a (hot) girl grabbing my belt buckle. :D Usually they tell you to flip it over yourself, and they just look.

I usually try avoid beeping by taking off all my crap and stuffing it in my carry-on bag. Never works, what with all the boot eyelets and glasses, etc.
