Hello. I am looking for advice on a 3 inch or so fixed blade with sheath that I can carry on my belt sideways. I'm in and out of a truck all day so I would like something that won't snag or be uncomfortable. General use and stainless for the elements. Thanks in advance.

Too lazy to go grab mine to snap a pic, plus it's stashed in the bedroom where the wife and kid are asleep on their Saturday morning, (I just got home from work), but this little guy is just awesome!!!

Handles are a bit unrefined, but the leather cross carry sheath is very well done, and the n690 steel came razor sharp. One of the few that I have that bit me pretty good, lol...

All in all, it has the whole "push dagger" stigma to it, but with a handful of different modified grips, it does all the normal knife things you would need it to do with ease. It's compact, well priced, and single edged so no problems legally with the whole "two sides dagger" laws...

My 2nd suggestion would be the knife of your choosing with a custom sheath. A bunch of quality leather and kydex guys right on bladeforums... The Buck 0616 would be my first choice of knives I personally own. It comes with a solid sheath and straps to use as a boot knife, but all in all it's the perfect size and profile to wear cross carried. Be a great candidate for a custom cross carry sheath.

You have described something perectly that I have looked for for years. Always something about everyone I have considered that kept me from pulling the trigger. In most cases it is because the knife I find that fits the bill perfectly is some custom or something that is no longer made. Keep looking though. Gonna watch this thread closely.

Yes to fixed blades, but you are required to inform an officer if approached that you are carrying said weapon.

I live in NYC and often carry folders that would get me into trouble if it became known. There are exceptions for food handlers, of which I am one. But it's a gray area at best and the argument would likely need to be presented before a judge. A definite pain in the ass.

I if were on the streets all the time I would get the cheapest fixed blade that will work for me, because if you are detained it will be confiscated regardless of the final disposition in court. I knew one NYPD beat cop on another forum who openly bragged about confiscating a Sebenza from a 17-year old kid. He never did say what the disposition in court was. He kept it for his personal use.

Not sure if it can be horizontal carry, but the Cold Steel mini Pendleton has got some following. I have always liked the ones from DW Childress.

I would choose the White River Backpacker Pro. Sheath works for horizontal carry. I prefer cross draw for horizontal carry, but with the factory sheath, you'll have to feed your belt through it. But still a nice flexible sheath. This is my most recent small fixed blade acquisition. I usually just carry it vertical as I am too lazy to take my belt off.

My favorites other than the Backpacker are the Dozier Personals or Compact Personal. The Dozier kydex sheath snaps over your belt and you can put it on or take off without removing your belt. Great sheath!

I seldom carry a fixed blade around town, mostly because I never think of it and have my folder or two already in my pockets.

CRKT hunt n fisch is a great little EDC sized fixed blade for an affordable price. I'm pretty impressed with the overall package even though I have better, and far more expensive, options in that size range. For a higher cost, I really like the fit and finish of LT Wright knives but you'll need to get another sheath to run it horizontal whereas the hunt n fisch is one of the few production knives I've seen that comes with a horizontal carry sheath without adding anything extra (in the case of kydex/plastic)

Belt knives are for outdoors men and outlaw bikers who use them to fight with. Get a good folder with a pocket clip and look normal in society. I myself like my Steel Will Cut Jack in D2. Carrys nice and lite and slim.

Thanks Dangerously Dangerously for the recommendation.

Small fixed blades and sheaths for horizontal carry is what we do. Over the years I've found that 7" oal is about the biggest knife that will carry comfortably this way. Much bigger and you are catching it on seat belts, door jambs, life etc. My own personal edc is 5.25 inches oal and I've never found this knife wanting. As a cattle rancher, as well as a knife maker/leather craftsmen I use an edc well.... daily. Whether opening packages of supplies for the shop, feed sacks, hay bales etc. It gets used. We're kinda far away from life in NYC but here's a few shots.

Sorting some cattle about a month ago. I carry crossdraw above my left front pocket.

The wife does too and sometimes she'll carry it in a sheath of her design we call the Beltless Sheath. It goes from belt loop to belt loop and can be worn with or without a belt.

Or in a regular horizontal type sheath. Here she's modeling this pair of leggings before they ship to the customer.

Or helping a friend brand.

While roping a good knife that you can get to immediately, in case things go south quickly, (we call this live action cowboy shi.!) is a safety measure. Pocket knife is a can't get to it deal in those times. I've sold a lot of my knives and sheaths to guys the day after a wreck.

Its there ready if needed.

Anyhoo hope this helps some. If you are looking at any of my knives I'd suggest The Coyote, The Stainless Gordo, The Cowboy and perhaps The Compadre as coming pretty close to your criteria. The wife and I both carry Stainless Gordos.

Horsewright Horsewright - always love seeing your stuff. Real, honest to god working knives, that still look beautiful. Someday I'll be able to order one (have way too many things I'm saving for...LOL)

Meh...
I live in the suburbs, and have an office job. Carry a Benchmade Hodden Canyon, crossdraw, everywhere but to the office. No one even notices normally.

Though I do admittedly ride a motorcycle, and spend a lot of time outdoors.

Check out A.G. Russell's offerings. There's a bit of everything in their catalog.

My response exactly. I carried a 3" wharn for a year or so and the only times it got comments was when someone wanted to use it. Small fixed blades carry very discretely, if you want it to. I preferred pocket carry after getting a sheath with a clip but belt carried a while before that. Even after getting the pocket sheath, I belt carried a slippie in a horizontal sheath along with the fixed blade as it was a little more meeting friendly.
