Belt slap/vibration

What causes belt vibration? I recently added a third two inch roller wheel and flat patten to my Grizzly (which was originally a two wheel system) to make it a three wheel system and to bring the belt further forward for easier use. Now I get a slapping or vibration in the part of the belt that is unsupported, ie. between the two inch wheel on the platten and the idler wheel(in the front) and between the idler wheel and the lower drive wheel(in the back). Is this caused by poor alignment of the wheels and platten or possibly poor belt tension? Any ideas would be helpful as well as any ideas as how to solve this.
Thanks.

Sorry Wapiti I can't help you on this, but I've been getting the same thing on the Griz when I slack belt grind between the two standard wheels and this is even when I have really tight tension. It seems to happen more when I use the lighter grit belts (400-600). Sometimes the belt bounce really screws with my grind.

I would be very interested in seeing your new setup (if you have a pic). I've been trying to find a way to set up a small wheel config (2" and below) but have been unsuccessful. A three wheel system sounds great to try to make those tapered tangs as well.

Thanks,
Tom

The vibration could be the wheels are not lined up right or the joint in the belt. What kind of belts are you using?? The slap part sounds like the belt isn't tight enough.

The tension on the griz seems to be very light. I added an arm on the back with a turnbuckle and clutch spring. This has eliminated all the slap or vibration.

I would also like to see your 3 wheel set-up for the "Grizzly". Sounds like a great idea.

I am using a few brands of belts, some norton hoggers and 3m for finer grits and most of them do it, so I don't think it is the belts, but that may be possible.
I might try your idea, TJSmith, I think it could use some more tension. I was thinking about changing the spring, but I like your idea, too.
I knew as soon as I mentioned my modifications, I would get people wanting photos. Which is cool. I just haven't snapped any yet. I have planned to put photos of all of my modifications to this machine and some of the other tools I have designed and built up for you all, but I want to finish them first (and make sure they work, also). I work full time as a biologist (something like full time plus, in the summer) so the time I get to work on my machinery (and my knives) is somewhat patchy and limited. But I look at it this way, if and when I retire, I will have my shop perfect (well, probably not...).
So I hope everyone can be patient just a little longer. I will post some picts soon.
Thanks everyone.

Yeah i have a digital camera I'll see if I can get some pics online this weekend. The only thing with the tension increased the belts tend to pull apart so be careful.
Shoot now I got to clean up some of the mess.
