I've been searching for a knife that will take me to my "happy place" for quite a while, and it looks like I've finally found it (for the moment). I normally don't go with folders this large, especially for EDC, but I just couldn't resist. This thing is the full package.
I normally try to caption pictures, but these pretty much speak for themselves. The knife is comfortable in just about every position, even choked up with thumb on the side for fine cutting. It isn't the most comfortable knife I've ever owned, but it is higher on the comfort list rather than lower.
You'd think it would be a nightmare to EDC, but surprisingly even at 3/4" thick, it sits nicely in my pocket. The semi-lowrider clip is just right to be able to get enough grab to remove easily from my pocket. The included MOLLE sheath is a serious winner also. I don't EDC with a sheath, but when I go hiking, I usually wear shorts, and put my knife in a sheath on my backpack's shoulder strap or belt. This knife would still be a total STEAL without the sheath; it's pretty much the cherry on top.
I've seen this compared to the ZT 0200 quite a few times, and it's a very fair comparison. If Benchmade was intending to compete with that knife, then they certainly succeeded. I've handled both and prefer the Benchmade. Keep in mind, I'm at least as big of a Kershaw/ZT fan as I am Benchmade; they each have their own unique advantages in their product lines.
The cerakote blade coating isn't as durable as the DLC coating ZT uses, but I prefer the cerakote. The DLC coatings have a horrid chalkboard texture that gives me the creeps, and they also increase cutting resistance. As you can see, I've already put a couple miles on the knife, and it's holding up great. Benchmade does a really nice job with their D2. I have had bad experiences with D2 in the past, but in this case I decided to give it a chance, and I'm happy I did. It's seen a couple weeks of pretty solid use at work, and with only a few stroppings, still shaves arm hair easily. Speaking of shaving sharp, Benchmade has seriously stepped up the game on their factory sharpening.
I've always been a fan of Benchmade's fit and finish, but I have to say that this knife is one of the cleanest, most nicely done Benchmades I've personally handled. They really mean business with this release.
Enough talk, the pics:
