I just took delivery on my new Pheaton today.
I had seen some Benchmade knives locally and thought they were pretty nice.
I thought about it for a week or so and then ordered the Pheaton from Blade HQs.
The first thing I found was that in the extended position the knife wobbles quite a bit.
I guess you would call it a lockup problem. I am not sure this is normal?
Not what I expected.

I’m not an expert on otf autos, but I seriously doubt what you described is normal. However, I recommend getting a shipping label from Benchmade and ship it to them to be fixed.

I know they have the lifetime warranty and I do find this hard to believe but maybe it is normal.
I have sent a contact email to the company.
One of the things I normally look at in a knife is the lock up of the blade.
This is the first OTF I have ever had however.

OTF's do normally have some looseness in the open position. Its normal. Unless its a G&G deadlock and then lockup is excellent. Hopefully yours is addressed by BM if it is crazy loose. All the best.

All OTF have a little blade play, except the G&G mentioned. Maybe post a little video of the play, I had a phaeton and it locked up tighter than other OTFs I have owned.

The only OTF knife that I have seen advertised as NOT having any blade play was a Grant And Gavin Hawk Deadlock D/A OTF Automatic Knife CF/Ti (3.75" Dagger) in CTS-204P. Blade HQ was selling it and it was in a very recent YouTube video that released in September of 2018. I took note of it due to it's precision. Not sure what is available and what they cost off of the top of my head.

They just took orders a week ago. They start at $1100. No chance of getting one other than the secondary market for awhile.

All common OTFs have blade play. It's just the nature of the mechanism. Like most blade play, you won't really notice it when cutting things.

I think I will make arrangements to return this OTF. Yes I could have it worked on but it will loossen up again with wear I am certain.
It's just not worth $300 to me to have an automatic with loose blade.
I will find a side opening or assisted knife of some sort to replace it.
Perhaps the G-10 CLA will be a better choice for me.
I sent an email to Blade HQs to find out about the return.
