Well folks, at a pawnshop I saw this Benchmade 551-1 Griptilian. Awful grey and blue. But it had First Production 218 of 1000. $130 bucks and it is mine now.

Now I have other benchmade knives, including a Presidio II auto I got for $100, but this had the "First Production."

I'm getting conflicting values when I surf the net. I presume $130 isn't bad. Is it discontinued?

Thanks.

Benchmade still makes the "Grip". They are always a good start to anybody's knife collection.
What kind of steel is in the blade?

I don't think it's discontinued and it's a great buy at that price of course assuming it is genuine and it is new. However, I had difficulties selling a lnib 551-1 at the same price some time ago, so go figure.

If you want: you can get Grip with 20CV steel through the Custom Shop. 👍

The dash 1 grips have been discontinued, and why say awful grey and blue, I love that combo and kinda works as camo in jeans. The first production mark is something they do on every new model the first run of 1000-1500 get the stamp and a number. I'm more of a user than collector so never meant anything to me. And if it's used, sharpened, etc won't mean much. But if it's a safe queen might mean something in a couple years. Great find. The 550-1 was actually the first knife purchase over $150.00 I ever made, and still one of my favorites.
