I have been fortunate to carry a lot of great folders over the years including knives from William Henry, Strider, Microtech, Extrema Ratio, etc., and I am surprised to say this, but after carrying it for a few months, I have come to love this little $56 Benchmade mini-grip as much as any of them.

To me this knife embodies all of the elementary, back to basics components of exceptional knife design and manufacturing.

The materials are performance based rather than flashy- 154cm blade with a zytel type material for the handles provides everything you need for a hard working, high performance knife in this size, and nothing just for show.

The blade profiles and handles offered are also relatively simple but highly practical.

At the same time, just below the surface, there is plenty here for a knife enthusiast to appreciate and enjoy: the action is as smooth as any knife I've ever handled, and the fit and tolerances are exceptional- the tip of the blade on mine looks centered when closed, and the lockup is absolutely PERFECT in every way. It also has full steel liners recessed into the handle, phosphorus bronze washers, simple decorative touches on the thumb stud and lock release, nicely machined thumb and index finger grooves- thoughtful touches all the way around, making the absolute most out of the materials used on this value priced knife.

While I chose this size because of the 3" blade length restriction where I live, I have come to appreciate it as a great edc size. It is small enough to be unobtrusive and out of the way when clipped in your pocket, a "forget it's there" knife, but when you have it open in your hand, it is a comfortable size that is great to work with- I have yet to wish for a larger knife when using it. The smallish size and utilitarian appearance also make this a good knife to use in public. The handle feels great in my medium sized hands, and it offers a significantly sized, functional index finger guard, which is a design element that I really appreciate.

If I were to change anything, I would make the handle texturing slightly less aggressive where the clip contacts it. It it is not so aggressive as to tear up my pockets, but I would like it to rely on pressure a little more and texture a little less so that it isn't so "grabby". This is of course easily fixed with sandpaper.

When I first got this knife I wished that it had an open backed design, just because I thought it would look better, and theoretically be easier to clean. Now that I've gotten used to it, though, I really like it the way it is. I like the smooth feeling of that flat surface pressing into my palm when using the knife, and cleaning hasn't been a problem at all.

Congratulations to Benchmade on this truly exceptional knife, offered at a great price.

Great review eleven.

I consider the Mini Grip to be the most practical folder there is. No other knife works as well for me.

I agree, that is an awesome collection. I really like the blade profile on the Ritter versions.

I think a mini grip with aluminum handles might be a good option. That would keep it light, and at the same time keep the price reasonable.

I like the Noryl handle. I find it is practical for a user. Plenty tough. Doesn't scratch of take on blemishes. Doesn't scratch other stuff.

One of the lads had a great idea for those who want a heavier feel. He took some lead sinkers and epoxied them into the interior of the handle. Personally I like the light handle. But it's a dinkum idea.

You can also get an aluminum handle by buying a BM 707. The blade is quite similar to the Grip.

Nice collection!

Do you use any of those?:D

They all get carried and used, but as I have about forty folders, the wear gets spread out!

The Mini Grip that I use the most isn't in the picture - M2 High Speed Mini RSK Mk1 number 138.
148 is kept in reserve ;)

Here is mine, keeping my 806 D2 company. It's an excellent little knife, right up there with the very top value for money knives.

.

I don't know about plenty tough. Mine fell on the kitchen linoleum and the noryl broke off of the top front of where a bolster would be (if it had one). Since it has the steel liners it is only a cosmetic flaw, but it didn't make me think that it was all that tough. I was quite disappointed, as various folders that I have had with zytel or delrin handles have been bullet proof.

That's great!

I have 5 mini-grips myself, but only one carried for work EDC, thus has showed lots of wear on the clip, but still performs great! I have one I carry for "good" EDC (going out to eat, etc) and still looks brand new!

I also have to full size version, but I like the mini better.

Very good review, nice to see somebody taking time on an in-depth piece thanks.

I got a Mini G some months ago in yellow (rather lurid yes but I need something that shows up if dropped, this DOES)and wasn't taken with it at first. That all changed when it was taken into use, can't really find fault with it.The construction and finish is beyond reproach, the ergonomics A1 as is the size.Perhaps the clip is a bit aggressive as it does mark up the edges of pockets a bit but that could be the contouring on the handles.Would REALLY like a custom one with posh wood handles or even bone...dreams!As a real knife for real use this delivers and its build quality is much appreciated.Lets have some better handle colours to choose from please.

Nice review eleven. The 556 is the only knife that I have two of (other than the Buck 110) because I like it so much. It's so perfect for me that I've actually lost my desire to buy another knife - at least for the time being, lol.

My Mini Grip has taken over my pocket. And the even better news is that after a couple of years of everyday use the lock-up is still solid and I'm very happy with the edge holding- enjoy!

My 551 Gryp came dull as can be - making it spend a lot of time in the drawer, the then (5+ yr ago) EDC Kershaw Blur remaining in my pocket. Oddly, it feels less bulky - yet more secure deployed than the BM. I am glad that the minis are going better... the marketplace is glutted with vg - and v sharp - pocket knives.

Just got one today! traded back my crkt (unfortunatly not as nice as the one I bought about 5yrs ago) Feels great and will be my EDC.

I'd like to see one with a handle material other than noryl.

A few years ago there was a German engineer/artist making replacement Al handles for the Griptillians. You might be able to Google him or find some of his work. IIRC, the work looked top notch but you certainly paid for it. The replacement handle was about $220 (probably $350 with today's exchange rate).
