I am thinking about getting the BENCHMADE 585 MINI BARRAGE, any reviews on this knife. I noticed the handle material was a valox material..what is that?

valox is a plastic like material, they yse it most notably on the griptilian series. It does feel rather cheap but I haven't noticed any performance issues with it thus far

What's a good price for this knife, and i noticed that they recently converted the knife to assited openning..I want a non-assited openning knife...any sites selling that model still...

I thought it was always assisted opening?

My brand new mini-barrage is back to benchmade for the second time in a month for vertical blade play. They sent it back to me and my vertical play was still there :( hopefully when i get it back in a couple weeks it will be fine.

I own two other benchmades and they are both perfect so i'm sure this was just a fluke.

As for the knife when i didn't notice the problem with it all i can say is it's a fun knife. the assisted opening has a good kick to it which i love. the handles are a little slick and there's no jimping on it so if you are going to do any tasks that require a tight grip you might want to look elsewhere. it's just fine for EDC use.

If you want a benchmade of the same size without assisted opening they have a few to choose from, mini-bone collector, mini-griptillian comes in 4 different blade shapes, mini-presidio

I think Valox is just a brand of plastic. The kind they use in the Grips, if I am correct is "Noryl GTX."

The 585 was already my favorite EDC with the Valox scales, but I sold it in favor of one of the LE 585-1 models with the G-10 scales. The LE version is on the bottom...

The difference in handling and grip is very easy to get used to...I just wish Benchmade had put the G-10 scales on the regular production models to begin with.

In any case, the A/O Axis is a treat and worth checking out.

AFAIK Noryl GTX only comes in black. All other colors of the grip are either coated Noryl GTX or Valox.
There was a discussion about this few years back on BM forum.

And you would be quite correct as usual, THG.

I learn from the best around here, don't I :)

According to BM's site, the black ones are Valox as well. Either this is new, or they just copy/pasted all of the information from the colored models to the black model without changing the handle material description.

The Valox seems to be a good handle material on my 580 Large Barrage. The only issue that I have with it is that it's not textured enough and there's no gimping, so it's not quite as slip-free as the Griptillians. (Not an issue of handle material, but more of checkering). Still, even with that very fast and effective Axis Assist lock, my 580 has never slipped out of my hands. I just wish it was a tiny bit grippier, but still, a good handle material, although I agree that G10 would have been better from the start.

Did the knife with the blade play have a black coated blade by any chance?

as a matter of fact it does. is there some issue with the coating blades and blade play?

It seems to me, that the Black coating would eventually start to wear off, and create a gap between the blade...Creating blade play...I think ?

The AXIS lock is pretty simple. The only way there can be vertical blade play is if the lock bar is not all the way forward. The black coating is a little rough at first and can cause the lock bar to hang up some and not go all the way forward. If you had used it for a week or two and let it wear in and smooth out it would have gone away. Some of the coated blades I have seen have the coating removed on the tang but I have seen some that there is still some coating left on the tang lock ramp.

Even if it was uncoated, they can still be a little rough when new and need to be used some to smooth out. Was the play very slight, like maybe a half mm at the tip? Even with a little blade play, an AXIS lock is not going to fail because of it and there is usually very little and it's not like a lock back where the blade can move with pressure.

I would be willing to bet that most people would never know there is horizontal or vertical blade play unless they compulsively tug at the blade looking for it. I have knives with a little play and it has never been noticeable in use.

The AXIS lock is designed to adjust for wear. The tang where the lockbar sits is angled so as there is wear the lockbar just travels a little further up the angled ramp and gets tight. Most knives have the paint removed but there can be a little left over. Even if it is coated (which I think I have seen before) it is probably less than the thickness of a sheet of paper. The lock can easily adjust for that small amount of wear.

Since you guys are talking Benchmade Knives here, a quick question.

I'm new here at "Blade Forums" and have noticed there is no section/sub-section for Benchmande Knives as there are for Spyderco, SOG, etc.. Am I just not seeing it?

Those companies you mentioned asked/paid to have a subforum on BF.
Benchmade has it's own forum on their website. Cross forum links are not allowed here, but you can google it.

Ok. Thanks for the reply.

I have a couple other benchmades and out of the box the lockup has been solid. My mini-grip's lockbar was a little rough to disengage when i got it but it still locked up perfectly. the mini-barrage i got is only about a mm of play but that's still more than my other benchmades. I did play with it for several hours trying to break it in. I don't do anything heavy with my knives but i would like all my benchmades up to the same standard.
