Benchmade 940 and ZT 0640

I have a 940 and love it. I’ve been looking at the 0640 lately, so I’m quite interested in this thread.

Furthermore, if someone has any thoughts on comparing the 2, that would be quite helpful as well.

I don’t have my 940 anymore but here is a comparison of the 0640 with other well known models

The 940 is more comparable to the 0470 so it will give you an idea

IMO the 940 is a better EDC whereas the 0640 is a much larger and heavier knife
This being said I still have my 0640 :)

but take into account that with the 0640:
You may have some colour variations with theCF and you may like it or not
For it to be a good edc a pocket clip with a deeper carry should be better

if you have to replace the scales and the clip this may be extra costs

I have had a Benchmade 940 for years and now a ZT 0640 on the way...

The BM 940 is a blue ribbon EDC type knife for sure, but it only takes one experience of blowing out the Omega springs to somewhat sour one's view of the Axis lock. YMMV.

Solid knife for the $$

Great blade, pb washers and pierced like nobody's business.

Long gone. But it was damn good. Just not the ergos for me.

Have been through many folders over the past decade and the 940/943 series is the only model I have never considered getting rid of. The ergos, size, weight, blade steel work perfect for an edc. Also have custom scales from a member here on my 940/943 models, so another reason I would never consider selling them

How has the axis lock held up?

Yes I have had a few omega springs break in my benchmades and it is quite annoying to send the knife back to benchmade. Found a seller that sells omega springs on etsy for about $5 per pair and recently bought a handful to have on hand just in case.

I don't know why Benchmade don't sell omega springs, $5 a pair or something. It would save them time doing the repairs themselves under the warranty. And people would buy them for spares and back ups.
They'd make a few bucks out of it as well.
I'm sure this is what Leatherman thought of when they introduced the replacable cutters on their MT pliers. Saves replacing a whole new plier head under warranty.

Wow, I can't get over how good the ZT 0640 looks with aftermarket Micarta scales. It's very tempting.....

But, I'm still on the fence on the round thumb disc. I just don't think I can bring myself to warm up to it.

While it would be easy to argue that the 940 is more practical, I just never loved it, even after owning 4 versions.

The 0640 however, was love at first grip. Not sure why... certainly not as practical or as good performing as many of my knives. It just has soul.
