Hey Everyone,

I am new to the site and am starting to accrue a nice knife collection. My question is: Is purchasing a Benchmade Gold Class knife worth the money and if so any models in particular? Do these knives gain value or do they sit around their original msrp? Thanks for the input and I'm glad to be part of the site!!!

While I do not own any gold class benchmades, I personally feel the prices on the secondary market are a little high. I've seen gold class knives go for close to double the original price. However that could be said for lots of knives. Just look at the spyderco para military 2...

All things considered, I don't think you could lose value. My personal pick would be for the Osborne 940 gold class or the Sibert gold class knife.

Whether or not they're worth it depends on whether or not they're worth it to you.

For me? Absolutely not. I look for function over form and bang for my buck. Your mileage may vary.

The form over function formula applies only to knives I will actually use... I don't think there is a knife in my EDC rotation that cost over $100. That being said, I have a handful of knives I probably overpaid for, but were knives I had to have.

I don't disagree though

Depends on the model. For me, Gold Class is worth it if the 940 design is applied. If you love a regular production model (like me w/ the 940), chances are you will find a Gold Class model that applies to it - and you will like it.

For instance, one I wish I could have is a 940 DM, missed that boat :grumpy:

The gold glass knives are Benchmade's version of a custom blade. It's an art knife. A what we can do with a normal Benchmade knife when we don't have to keep it reasonable. They're beautiful knives. To compare them to their regular line is unfair. They're not an EDC.

Not custom, mid tech. Only the OP can answer his question.

There are any number of reasons for buying a gold class, just as there are any number of reasons for buying something like an Opinel or SAK.

My position is pretty simple, I lose less money and have no regrets with using a production knife and all I do is use my knives.

Form, collectibility, looks pretty, possible investment, ornamentation, using an expensive knife and showing off.... Just some of the reasons people buy gold class, none of them wrong, just not my reasons for buying.

Buying a Gold class knife isn't worth it to me when I can buy (afford) a working knife in the Black or Blue class that I WOULD use.

The Gold Grip was worth what I paid for it without a doubt. It became a user when I put in a Ritter blade.

It is going to depend on your affinity to the model in question. The only other gold class that attracted my attention was the Dejavoo because I love the design and may have dropped the cash in it had I not got into the game too late.

You get what you pay for-- if extra F&F appeals, they're worth it. But like others above I gen'ly own knives I'll carry.

I carry half a GC-- I really like both the look and feel of the CF handle on the GC Grip, so when I found a clean GC Grip user (you don't find used GC's very often) for reasonable $$ I paired the handle w/ a satin s30v blade that I also liked, sold off the unwanted half. I own a NIB GC Grip as well, only GC I have. First BM purchase, too nice (at the time anyway) to use. I'll get around to selling it....

Worth it? Heck no! Most benchmades aren't. They sure are cool though. I still like them. If I was made of money I'd have every one!

It's worth it when aluminum doesn't do it for you anymore. I carried my 940-121 for a month in a half (before I was on a 530 kick) and it was a great user. Who cares if its a GC, if you like it, use it.

If the others don't get used, I'll sell or leave them for kids - some models you can't pass up, others you can. Just depends on what you like. I know if they produced another 530 GC, I would be all over that. *Nudge *Nudge BM :)

I have two of the Gold Class Grips and one Kulgera full damascus Benchmade. I paid far less than retail and find each of them to be great.......
