Benchmade Nimravus Kydex Sheath?

I have an older Nimravus (G10 scales) with that sheath. It's OK, works fine for me. I filed down the thumb lock for a lower profile. The sheath retains the knife great without engaging the thumb lock.

The drop down belt loop on mine feels to be rubberized/-ish polymer, although not straight rubber. On my sheath, it is removable, but I've always used it with the belt loop on it. Not sure how you'd attach the sheath to your belt without it. Maybe Tek-Lok (which I dislike immensely).

OK here goes: WHY does Benchmade make such great knives and then put them in the world's lousiest, IMO, sheaths? There's a whole bunch of Kydex and Concealex makers out there ready and eager to fill the void, but I'd love to have someone from BKC offer up the reason for this. From the first 220 Snody fixed blade onwards I've always tossed the factory issue in lieu of a much safer and simpler design. And this isn't just my peeve, I know that.

Have the sheath. It's rubbish. The thumb lock works great... Until you forget to unlock the damn thing and pull the knife out. At that point, you've stripped the soft plastic locking mechanism, rendering it useless. Luckily as stated, the sheath holds the knife in there by way of tension on the handle-slab bolt recess.

Another crumby thing is once the knife is out, the inside of the sheath doesn't allow you to just thrown the knife back in. There are 90 degree corners in the mouth of the sheath that grab the tip. Nobody that has unsheathed my 140 has been able to simply place it back in the sheath on the first try.

I asked BM about buying the nylon sheath and they quoted me $50. I don't use the 140 enough anymore to justify that kind of coin. If it ever bothered me enough, I'd just get a smaller Spec-Ops and modify it a bit.

I c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y agree :thumbdn:

It feels as though no thought whatsoever was taken in regards to the sheaths, other than the Gold Class variants of the fixed. It would be nice for BM to elaborate but they won’t :D

It’s funny, my Dad moved away from BM in the past solely because he felt their fixed blades were getting *cheaper (but I think the sheaths gave him that impression).

I don't about you guys but I feel that most folding knife companies make really bad sheaths for their fixed blades. Might get a custom sheath now...

Hmmm.... that was not the impression I was trying to give. I have had no problem with the sheath, and rather like it.
As stated, the thumb-lock actually never did LOCK the knife in the sheath. It just increased the force required to withdraw the knife. Anyway, it is, IMO, one of the better sheaths that I have used. I don't seem to have the problem with re-sheating the knife.

Bottom line, IMO, the sheath isn't pretty, but it is quite serviceable. I've had better, and I've had many that are quite worse, and several of those have been from custom knife-makers.

Any updates? I wouldn't mind finding a simple Kydex with no fancy locks, just a traditional loop that retains it by snapping around the handle.
I'd even settle for a Black leather sheath. :)
