Actually, I have both and wanted to share (okay, brag a little) with all of you my thoughts on both of these firearms.

Got the XD about three months ago and have put over 1000 rounds through it. Not a single malfunction and it’s been a joy to shoot. My only complaint is that my fingers are pretty long so it’s hard to use just the tip of my finger to fire. I installed a hogue overgrip and so far it seems to help.

Anyway, the XD controls recoil very well and follow-up shots are pretty easy. The white dots on the sights could be more bright/bold, but in normal light they are fine. Balance and weight are just fine for a 5” barrel. For a pistol that cost me only $480.00, I can’t complain about a single thing.

I’ve wanted a Beretta for some time now and a few months ago I held a 96 Brigadier and decided right there to get it. The Brigadier has a heavier slide than the standard 96, front and rear dovetail sights, and very thick Hogue grips. The balance was just perfect for me.

I’ve put about 700 rounds through it and had only 1 FTF. Not as perfect as the XD, but statistically insignificant. The only problem with the Beretta is that the giant cutout in the slide allows spent casings to fly straight up and then back down on my head or down my clothes.

The really big difference between firing these two is with the first shot and with the Beretta in DA mode. Pulling the trigger and getting the hammer back to fire requires so much more skill than when the hammer is cocked back. With the XD, since it’s striker fired, there is no difference in trigger pull from shot one through 10.

Overall accuracy, for me, is better with the Beretta since the big grip and heavier barrel help me keep a steadier hold. The dots on the sights are also much brighter than the XD and helps tremendously with sight picture.
Perhaps since I’ve wanted a Beretta for so long I give the nod overall to the Beretta. But, for the money, the XD is simply fantastic.

One last thing. The XD safety system is a grip safety and a trigger safety. In my opinion, it’s nearly foolproof and should be the standard for striker fired automatics. Nothing to turn on or off, but very, very difficult to have an accidental discharge. You literally have to hold it correctly and pull the trigger to “accidentally” fire the thing.

As I progress with my planned pistol training I’ll try and report to all of you my thoughts on each one and how they perform.

Thanks for listening.

I'm surprised you had a FTF with the Beretta. I had a 96 for years and had one FTF the whole time - pretty sure the reason was bad ammo. I eventually traded for a 92 but it was the weapon in which I had the utmost confidence. Do you know the cause of your FTF?

Haven't shot the XD myself but it looks pretty good. Thanks for the review.

I have the XD40, and I love it.

I have only fired a few rounds through it, and experienced no problems whatsoever.

Now, if I can find the right EDC holster, I'll be in business.

I have been thinking about buying an XD40.

Good to here that you like it.

I was using "white box" at the time of the FTF and I know some have had issues with that ammo with other autoloaders.

I've read that the XD will eat anything you put into the magazine, and I'm inclined to think it's true. Have yet to try Wolf ammo, but I know others have used it with no problems.

One thing does puzzle me about the Beretta and that is the plastic guide rod. Any of you ever break one?

The polymer guide rod was big news for a while, but I have not heard of anyone actually breaking one. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Berettas are a lot of things, but untested is not one of them. Beretta did their homework before replacing steel with "plastic."

I have had an XD40SC for about two months now. It was my first pistol and seemed like a good buy for the money. Before I purchased the XD I had shot a glock and a HK both in .40. Being new to pistols, I was not able to tell any difference between the three. About a month later, I bought the 5" .45GAP model. To me, it is even easier to control than the .40. Follow-up shots are tighter with the .45GAP. Out of about 500 rounds, I had one failure to feed with the .40 but I'm pretty sure it was because of my loose grip. For beginning shooters, I believe any XD is a great gun.

BTW, barsto has .357 sigs barrels for the 3" XD that will be available in a couple of months. I plan to try one of those out.
