Actually, I have both and wanted to share (okay, brag a little) with all of you my thoughts on both of these firearms.
Got the XD about three months ago and have put over 1000 rounds through it. Not a single malfunction and its been a joy to shoot. My only complaint is that my fingers are pretty long so its hard to use just the tip of my finger to fire. I installed a hogue overgrip and so far it seems to help.
Anyway, the XD controls recoil very well and follow-up shots are pretty easy. The white dots on the sights could be more bright/bold, but in normal light they are fine. Balance and weight are just fine for a 5 barrel. For a pistol that cost me only $480.00, I cant complain about a single thing.
Ive wanted a Beretta for some time now and a few months ago I held a 96 Brigadier and decided right there to get it. The Brigadier has a heavier slide than the standard 96, front and rear dovetail sights, and very thick Hogue grips. The balance was just perfect for me.
Ive put about 700 rounds through it and had only 1 FTF. Not as perfect as the XD, but statistically insignificant. The only problem with the Beretta is that the giant cutout in the slide allows spent casings to fly straight up and then back down on my head or down my clothes.
The really big difference between firing these two is with the first shot and with the Beretta in DA mode. Pulling the trigger and getting the hammer back to fire requires so much more skill than when the hammer is cocked back. With the XD, since its striker fired, there is no difference in trigger pull from shot one through 10.
Overall accuracy, for me, is better with the Beretta since the big grip and heavier barrel help me keep a steadier hold. The dots on the sights are also much brighter than the XD and helps tremendously with sight picture.
Perhaps since Ive wanted a Beretta for so long I give the nod overall to the Beretta. But, for the money, the XD is simply fantastic.
One last thing. The XD safety system is a grip safety and a trigger safety. In my opinion, its nearly foolproof and should be the standard for striker fired automatics. Nothing to turn on or off, but very, very difficult to have an accidental discharge. You literally have to hold it correctly and pull the trigger to accidentally fire the thing.
As I progress with my planned pistol training Ill try and report to all of you my thoughts on each one and how they perform.
Thanks for listening.
