Greetings All! This is my first post here although I've read through about every other post on the site. I'm a knife enthusiast who spends a great deal of time researching knives before finally buying one. Right now I'm looking for a Hunting knife with a 4 to 7 inch blade. Uses for the blade would be anything from skinning small or large game to general camp use. Through my research I've come upon the Buck Alpha Hunter with ATS-34 steel, Bench Made's Rant Bowie, and some of the different styles Knives of Alaska and Cold Steel carry. I haven't seen a lot of discussion on Knives of Alaska, but they seem to be some pretty rugged knives. I would like to find something nice for under $150. Keep in mind this will be a knife put to work. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm also interested in your opinions on the kind of steel. Stainless such as 440C, AUS 10, ATS-34 and such or High Carbons like D-2, 1095, or Cold Steel's Carbon V.

Wow thanks for the link. I've seen similar postings but none as in depth. It's definitely going under my favorites. I have a basic understanding of the different types of steels, but would still like some opinions on what is preferred on the kind of knife I'm describing above. Thanks again for the link.

Buck 119,Fallkniven F1,Ka-Bar(full sized or shorty). All solid hunting knives.
What are you hunting and where should help you select the type of knife.

I'm in the Military currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan. My next duty station is in Alaska. I grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC. The knife needs to be something for all around use. Big game, small game, fish cleaning, digging an arrow out of a stump, and maybe even bringing along to Iraq or Columbia on my next deployment.

The knives I mentioned will do all of that.Others will no dobut add to this list.
Welcome to the forums.  :D

The Cold Steel Master hunter has always gotten much praise. Availlable in Carbon V or AUS-8.Mine is the stainless steel and has been my main hunting knife for years .A very practical knife and a great value !

Timberline Zambezi 6" is a rugged belt-knife.
That Buck folder would be a perfect companion.
Kershaw Echo is an awesome skinner in Aus 8.

Thanks for the advice. I'm looking at any knife that's listed. I would really like to see if the some of the same knives get mentioned, or if everyone has such different tastes and opinions they're all different. I didnt' mention prior, but I'm looking for a fixed blade hunter. I already have a pretty extensive folder collection.

I suggest you consider Bark River knives. Right in your price range, well made, and with a huge choice of handle materials. They have many different hunting knives available, depending on your choice of blade shape and size. DLT Trading has a great selection.

swamp rat howling rat  or cold steel master hunter in carbon V

thats not to say these 2 knives are equal.....they're not.

I had a Buck Alpha folder, until I lost it last year. It was a rugged, solid, sharp weapon. A bit heavy for pocket carry, as I did, but they come with a sheath. The blade was I think about 4", perhaps a bit less, but the lockup was tight. Of course, a folder is not as rugged, but the buck is a solid tool. I might get another, as I miss mine.

A 4" blade that's 3/16" thick will gut, skin, do fish and game plus be nice around camp. For 150.00 you should be able to get a hand made blade in drop point configuration. You could use a stout hunter like that for moose size game on down. Something like this one by Charles May. Nope. Don't know the man but it should do everything you're wanting.
