Hi all! I am a boy scout and I want to get my very first knife. I will be using it on camping trips and such. I need the knife to have around a 3" long blade and under 50$. I have a smith 3 in 1 sharpener at home but I am not That good at sharpening. Please help me choose a knife because I am not sure what to pick. Thanks

Save your cash and get a Victorinox Recruit (about $18)or Pioneer (around $30). Either would be perfect for what you need and they will be easy to maintain.

First knife...think you would be happy with a Buck 110. Comes with nice sheath, lifetime warranty and every knife owner that calls himself a owner/collector has one! Anywhere from $28-44 depending on where you go. Amazon has them for $28. Good luck!

SAK Tinker is a really good one to look at. I'll also second the Buck 110 for heavier use.

Victorinox Alox Farmer is another good choice. It has a saw blade in addition to the other tools. About $30.

Don't get a Buck 110, or any mall ninja tactical junk. They may look cool, but as a Scout you need a tool that works in lots of situations - food, whittling, fire starting, fixing, building, etc...

You need a Victorinox Hiker. I had one in Boy Scouts (still have it), and it's the first knife I gave my boys.

Awesome saw, stainless steel, easy to sharpen. Every tool on it is useful to a Scout. Big enough to do lots of work, small enough to carry in a pocket.

Or, if you want to add scissors and a (surprisingly useful) hook, the Victorinox Fieldmaster is another option. It's thicker & heavier though, and may not ride comfortably in your pocket.

When I was in Boy Scouts, a Swiss Army Knife (SAK) was like the coolest thing to me. Long blade, short blade, screw drivers, awl punch, cork screw... ALL THE COOL GADGETS. I think it was a Huntsman that I had.

Nugget of advice: If you're going to camp with it, get yourself a good length of cordage and tie it to the split ring and to your belt loop closest to the pocket you're going to carry it in. "Dummy cording" it to yourself will help prevent you from losing it out in the bush. ALSO, Stick With It! Make Eagle! I got eagle in June 2001 and it's one of my proudest accomplishments. I put it up there with all my military service as well (12 years in the Air Force and Army). It'll only benefit you in the long run.

Uh.... Yodasko didn't say it HAD to be a folding knife, right? That is what I was going to suggest anyway because I think you can get much more use out of a folder than from a fixed blade in your situation... however... Could we also suggest you a stout fixed blade just in case he is allowed and willing to carry one?

Thank you all for your replies, but I already have a Swiss army knife and am looking for a pocket knife with only a knife and not a multi tool. Thanks for the feedback!

Go with something Swiss Army, what ever model you chose will be fine. Oops just saw your above post. Buck makes lots to choose from; 110, 112, 55.

OK, from your original post, we were thinking you didn't have one.

The next step, then, will be a Buck 110 (but it's heavy, so sheath carry).

For something lighter, with a pocket clip, maybe a Kershaw Skyline?

Ask your scout leader and your parents. If you already have a SAK then I would say you are set!

Maybe if we knew why you wanted something other than the Swiss Army Knife, we could help answer your question better.

As far as a pocket knife for camping, I cannot imagine anything more appropriate than a Swiss Army Knife with a saw blade, like the Farmer.

I think I am missing some key detail.

Exactly. Its the perfect choice.

Unless it doesn't have some feature you are looking for. And you are not telling us what that feature is.

There are a lot of Kershaw knives that would fall in your price range.

Check out a Spyderco Delica also.
