Interested in hearing thoughts on what would be the best handle material on a big Busse chopper. NMFBM- Killa Zilla- MOAB etc. I've seen lots of pics and none stand out as a winner. Colors also if you have a favorite.

I'm thinking canvas micarta for a combination of grippiness and smoothness.

While I do like the canvas micarta, the paper micarta, and the G10 – for me, the Resiprene C handle material is the best handle material for choppers, due to its ability to absorb shock.

Depends on what you want. I like Mycarta for the feel. Paper looks great, G10 is heavier, but looks cleaner with sharper colors and shine (for the most part).

I think that snakeskin is one of my favorites, with green linnen a close second. Tan is probably third favorite.

I have never used a chopper with Res c handles sounds great. I like the feel of it, it makes the knife significantly lighter, and changes the balance point forward . Some like more cushion and shock absorption from the softer handle. Some feel that mycarta or wood is more efficient for energy transfer.

Try them all, and decide which you like.

If anyone near me has a DF or a battle rat, I might have to sneak over and try one out.

I have had to rough sand all of them (other than reciprene c) in order to get them to grip in the hand except canvas micarta.

My favourite handle shape for comfort on chopping is the KZ ....but my favourite handle material is Res C .... if Jerry could do a Res C mold with the KZ shape .... I would buy a KZ like that in a heart beat .... I also think it would be great on a NMFBM blade as well ... you could thin down the thickness and still have the same weight forward/chopping power as well .... but make the over all weight of the knife a lot lighter .... it is a "win-win" combo for me ....

A 30 oz Res C KZ with a Asymetrical Edge would be my "custom shop" dream knife if it could be done ....:thumbup:

Tigerhide Linen Micarta (Hand Shaped)

I believe that's what is on my NMFBM-LE it is a great handle!

Haven't seen much G10 on a MOAB except for the Orange/Black in the photo thread. Looks great though. Always been partial to G10- great stuff.

the best handle for a chopper in my opinion is rubber horse stall mat. it has a very "warm", or grippy feel to it. you can find it just about anywere for a good price. the only bad thing is it's not as tough micarta.

I use to be nothing but G-10, infact I would pass on a kinfe if it didn't have G-10. Then I saw the light and the error of my ways and slowly warmed to Micarta. Now I have way more micarta and I to like the feel of it better than G-10 on some of the knives. I really like G-10 on the Medium to Large Fusion knives.

Hand-smoothed micarta or g10. If you chop right you won't have to worry about shock transfer, and you don't want sharp hotspots.

I will agree with most of what has been said here. Respirene is probably the most comfy but I really like the feel of hand shaped micarta. The most recent smooth bolt FSH that was released at Easton is THE most comfortable handle I have held other than respirene. I also really like snakeskin when a magnum handle is not wanted. I generally like magnums because I have big hands but my CGFBM with snakeskin standard handles feels soooooo good in hand. It doesn't hurt that it looks so dang sexy too. Then of course there is the beauty of black paper. I have been thinking about swapping handles on one of my choppers and getting hand shaped black paper magnums. I would guess they would feel as nice as hand shaped canvas micarta. I also have to mention the BWMLE handles because they are some of the most comfy handles ever and they are black paper.

So I guess to sum it up . . . I can't decide which I like best, but I definitely have some favorites.

I agree with Evolute also - Res-C is the winner by far for comfort.

Next would be Canvas Micarta. That's about all I ever get on large Busse Combat knives. Some of my smaller ones wear some G10, but even here I like the Canvas Micarta better. Linen is 3rd in line.

I hate to admit it but, I have not seen a Res-C handle( I have to get out more)

Oeser: Hand shaped black paper Magnums may be a great combo!

I'm really liking the g-10 battle rattle handles on the BWM, once you smooth the ridges on the handle some. I haven't experienced any hot spots or busse pinky. it's smooth enough to not eat your hands up, but grippy enough so the knife doesn't go flying out of your hand once you get tired.

I've had several kraton handled choppers and the battle rattle is far more comfortable for extended use. The diamond pattern on the kraton has actually pulled pieces of my hand off before.

Res-C vote here +1, +1, +1, +1, +1, +1, +1, +1, +1, ....

On the eighth day God invented Resiprene-C and mailed it all to Wauseon, OH as his ongoing gift to humanity. Or at least those willing to abdicate their humanity for Hogdom.

OINK ON!!
