System will largely depend on your sharpening level.
The best system for basic level will have some sort of guides that keeps the blade straight for a consistent and even edge, as well as a preset edge angle, the typical angle at 25 per side. The latest pull through portables now have higher walls as guides, cheap, work and easy way to learning the nuances of sharpening and a more personal understanding of the blade. Lansky's quadsharp is a great portable. The Smiths multi angle sharpener is better but is a tabletop sharpener which are easier to use as they are more stable.
Intermediary includes usually rely less on guides and more touch like the sharpmaker.
There's also new intermediate kits are designed in between like Lanskys's basic kit or Work sharp bench.
Use of a water stone or sharpening stone is all you and where you become master of your own blade. Your own angle. Where sharpening skill becomes an art.
The ceramic water wheel kits like Minosharp and Am Tech actually work pretty good easier than a pull through on you and the edge. Worth a try at reasonable costs.
Also, invest in a diamond rod, from China is fine; that's where they all come from.
