I need some help picking my slicer , I want something that will cut an hour thru wood and still shave hair. I read that farid 121 is above 15v or t15. Is 121 the super speed steel at 72 hrc ? I dont care about brittle

It's REX-121... And farid happens to use it sometimes. (I have one of them :D). I do not have a 15v knife nor have I tried one, so I can't be of much help there... Don't care about brittle? Tungsten.

Edge geometry is going to be almost as important as steel type.. Gl!

If you plan on cutting a lot of wood you better rethink your stance on brittle... One little twist with the edge buried into the wood and you could end up with some really nasty edge damage, which on the steels you mentioned, would be quite the hassle to fix. Also keep in mind that the steels you're referring to are not exactly common or easy to work with so you may have trouble finding a blade with any of those steels or even a maker willing to make you one.

Personal experiences has shown me that CPM REX-121 has more knife properties than CPM 15v, although 15v is a good steel, have found it to be very wear resistant but it won’t take on a sharp edge, in my opinion it is more for tooling application than a knife blade, it has too much vanadium which is the reason I would say CPM-10v is a much more balanced knife steel than 15v, this is only based on my personal tests and opinion.
Although CPM REX-121 has more carbides than 15v does, but REX 121 has more ‘knife properties’, I have been able to make it work very well for this application, I have tested the REX 121 on lots of Kevlar and Dyneema ropes and it cuts very well.
Some steels just don’t work very well for ‘knife applications’ , they are more designed for just tooling applications, for example MPL-1 (supracore) is a very high carbide steel, does it have ‘knife properties’ I have heard not. At some stage I will try it and do my own testing. Take care, Farid

Crucible stated that CPM 10V is more suitable for knife blades than REX 121 so you may want to keep that in mind. ;)

Check This Out....

You just revived a thread from 2013....

A)don't revive 8 year old threads
B) look in the knifemakers section for more information on steel.

I'm sure we're all very impressed with the contributions to a thread dormant for eight years. Posts moved offline.

Good night, Gracie.
