I have been using the Light my Fire fire steel. Is this one of the better ones on the market?

The best one is the one you have....

okay - I won't finish it. ;)

TonyM - that is a good price too.

OP:

The reality is that I think if you have a chunk of it on you - it will work. I like the idea of the Light my fire - but you can buy a chunk of Ferro rod cheaply that you can customize as well.

This is the best price I have seen on a fire steel kit:

I agree. Light my fire firesteels are the best. I love my army model, the scout is perfect for my psk too!

I agree with you... customs BRKT look great but they are (by my standars) pretty expensive for a chunk of ferrocerium and a pretty handle. I guess I am better off getting blanks somewhere else and fitting handmade handles on them. You can get as fancy as you want, micarta, wood, whatever!

By the way, what size of firesteel fits in the BRKT fire steel loops? (I am talking about an Aurora and Canadian Camp... but I guess all are the same size, right?).

lmf best i have used up next to my blast match fire steel i have sine the blast match system took a dump...i just use the steel now...

I bought some 10x100mm from eBay and they are worth every penny... I don't know if the alloy is exactly the same as the LMF ones (I bet it is) but these ones work for me.

I've noticed that there IS a difference in alloy. Some (from Ferrocerium.com) are more smooth and a bit softer, then the LMF steels.
Both work great, but I've also seen some cheaper ones on the bay that are just too soft or too hard.
Soft firesteel= big curls of steel and harder to get a spark. But if they ignite, the curls do last longer when burning/glowing.
Hard firesteel= hard to scrape and hard to get good "thick" long lasting sparks.

The key is to get a good scraper, that does wonders in throwing sparks. My Fallkniven F1 and Hultafors working knife do extremely well with almost all firesteels........

I like the LMF steels most.........:D
