Whats the best honing oil thats a decent price and that is readily available to use on a lansky sharpening system

Any mineral oil will do (honing oil is just light mineral oil). Many use the 'pharmaceutical grade' mineral oil found in the laxative aisle at the grocery/drug store, which is a little heavier, but it'll work just as well (and it's cheap). Baby oil is the lighter grade, with a bit of scent added. It'll also work fine.

so mineral oil can be used to ean the stones as well? do these oils you mentioned lift the shavings out of the stones like quality oil does

Any oil will float the shavings away. The light mineral oils (honing oil, baby oil, etc.) have an additional advantage, in that they're relatively easy to clean up with regular dish detergent (Dawn, Palmolive, etc.) and water, and a toothbrush; that's how I'd clean the hones, BTW. The dish detergent & water could even be used instead of oil, for floating away the swarf. Just add a little water periodically, to keep the hone wet.

Mineral oil mixed with a few drops of Juniper oil is what I have in my kit. A few drops of Cedar oil works great too. They don't do anything extra for ya, but sure smells nice...

With finer stones And diamond hones, spit. Doesn't work so well on coarser AlOx or SiC stones, because they suck in so much of the lubrication that you can't produce enought spit.

When I used honing oil in the past I preferred Buck honing oil. It is lighter than most out there. I found that most honing oils lubricate the stone too well and slow down the cutting action of the stone.

what oil do you guys think cleans the stones better preferences. or should i say float the shavings. better
