Hello all. I am new to the sport of baying wild boars. I am looking for a recommendation on a good blade to be used for finishing the hogs off after they are bayed by the dogs. I really like the looks of the Busse Terror Monkey, however this knife is currently out of my price range.

Thanks for your help!

Most large knives will do the job fine. I used one I made and it was really a bit more than I needed for the hog I killed (@ 350 lb. boar). I'd say go with at least a sharpened swedge so you can cut on the upstroke as well as on the downstroke. I would avoid finger holes. Just another way to get your finger tangled up in the knife. I did use a lanyard but worn in such a way I could release it if necessary.

I'd say something in the 8-10 inch range would be more than adequate.

I'll add a picture of one I made for this purpose.

1/4" ATS-34, 10 1/2" blade. Brass guard, stag handle.

Entrek Sub Hilt would do the job very well. It also has a sharpened spine and very secure grip. And its built like a tank!

Great suggestions guys. Please try to post price range for the recommended knives. I am looking to stay under $200.

Thanks!

welcom to the most addictive sport in the hunting world,i talked in another thread about myself hunting pigs with dog-n-knife runs in my family for generations its a big sport in hawaii....so to answer your question its realy up to you an your dogs hunting expierence an your budget on what knife an size you want to use.my gramps used a folding buck my father uses a modified machete(onterio 12"),my bro likes the coldsteel OSS,or recon scout,my hunting buds us busse,f.dick (stickers),fallkniven,an others but most of them use coldsteel machetes an the cheaper models in krupp steel i know alot of people dont like that brand here but for the price thats all i got to say about that,i use a barkriver gameskeeper 2 it has a 5-3/4"in blade, but i now use a koyote package a 13"boar hunter to cut trail an poke (we hunt in jungle terrian)its lashed to my pack an a 6"hunter/boner on my hip.if i hunt clear areas i just take the hunter/boner.i hunted almost 10 yrs strait with jus a kabar you dont need a zombi slayer but its up to you an what you feel comfortable with...aloha an good hunting,,,,dog-knife-4-life

I agree Kalema's brother. I very much like the Cold Steel Peacekeeper. It's double edged, has a great grip and is easy to sharpen and resistant to corrosion. The OSS also is superb, and even Cold Steel's large Voyager folding knives (5-/6-inch blades) will do the trick.

Kalama, you know, it isn't nice to rub our noses in the fact that you live in one of the most spectacular places on Earth AND get to enjoy things like this as well.

Yes, I'm jealous.

Get a boar spear. It's made for it, and cheap. :D

If not that, then I know a lot of folks have used the Condor Pipe Knife for the purpose with good success.

That thing is brutal! I would hate to be on the business end of that! Condor Pipe Knife that is. I would suggest a Ratweiler, one can be had for 250.00 nowadays.

Kalama, I won't hold it against you but I won't deny that I'm a bit envious.

Ivan51, thanks. It turned out to be a bit more knife than needed but I guess I'd rather have too much than too little.

Jess, I don't know if you can find one or not but Larry Harley designed a knife for this purpose that was made into a production model by Paragon years ago. Larry has done a lot of hog hunting from what I've read and the knife he designed would serve you well.

I'd say most any quality knife with a good, sharp edge would do fine. I personally would prefer a guard of some sort to prevent my hand from sliding up onto the blade. If you were so inclined you could post a message in the makers forum to see if anyone there would be willing to make you something in that price range. You could have your own input into the design and there are a lot of quality makers on this forum. I think you might be surprised what you could get for $200 around here.

Let us know what you finally decide on.

A bit off-topic, but I'd like to hunt semi-wild cows and bulls in Dutch nature reserves. A bit tricky but a FBM on one hand and a Fehrman EJ on the other should do the job.

Personally, I'd say that one of the best tools for the job is a hunting sword. You'd have to go custom these days, but they were used for dispatching wounded or trapped game.

Well, I would like to think that this one of the better ones.My nephew is a Hog trapper here in Florida. But his hobby is hunting with a knife and dogs. After many talks with him about the design ,needed to be quick and efficient, this is what we came up with.It has an 8 1/2" blade and is 14" oal.

It has been heavily used and field tested for about two years now and has taken many hogs as well as a few cows. His biggest hog to date with this knife was 460 lbs.Dave
