best leatherman for fishing

I have the one the Gerber makes. I think it's called the "Fisherman". It's GREAT!!! The pliers are extended to get way down there after a hook. When you need the pliers, you just snap your wrist and it's there. You won't have to put your fish down to open your tool. Plus it has all the tools in the handle that come in handy for repairing reels, etc.

Welcome to Bladeforums! I'll move this thread to the multi-tool forum for you ...

Hi Vermont woodsman welcome to the multitool section . There are so many multitools to choose from but a good place to start is to make sure it has a lanyard ring on it just incase you drop it in the water when your fishing .Also do you want it for just fishing or say for EDC (every day carry ).Have a good read on here and you will soon see which ones are the most favoured ,just ask if you have anymore questions .

For those who can accept that people have different political views ;) Leatherman are some of the best tools around.
I carry the Wave (old model) everyday and i love it, it's the best i ever had. Also take a look at SOG, Gerber and Victorinox multitools. I personally think the Victorinox is a bit too heavy but of course it's super quality. The new Wave has bitholders and i don't really like that, the old was/is better IMHO.

I have always used a leatherman PST-II. Anything bigger and it doesn't fit well in a pocket. The tools I use (in decreasing order) are the pliers (tightening knots, removing hooks etc), file (sharpening hooks) and scissors (trimming the tag end of knots).

I also do a lot of fishing,,,the LM PST-II is my favorite. Diamond file/hook sharpener and small scissors are great.

I believe this model is discontinued however, many are still in the retail pipeline and on eBay.

A long time ago before the advent of the multi-tool I fished a lot. I never went fishing without a set of Manley pliers in a leather belt sheath. They had parallel jaws and carbide side cutters. When you find yourself with one hook of a lure in a fish and a hook in your anatomy or clothes you will be thankfull for the cutting power of those carbide cutters. Small freshwater hooks or larger saltwater hooks can be cut in half with one hand.{you may only have the use of one hand } Next to the pliers was my "fishing" knife. This was a commercial boneing knife with a wood handle I wrapped with tarred cod line.Neither of these tools ever let me down and only someone that has had a large hook[3/0 or 4/0] in their hand with a good size striper also attached and flopping around doesn't want to try to deploy a folding tool one handed

I've used my Leatherman Wave for fishing in the last 3-4 years. I tend to fish from a kayak or the beach. I have it sitting in the sheath with the pliers open (I note the new sheaths allow you to do this even more effectiively). I wipe it with an oily rag fairly regularly to prevent rust.

Several leatherman tools are good for fishing needs but at the rate they are introducing new ones a model with a rod and reel as well as a fly tyer may not be far off.
