Best little belt grinder?

I am constantly getting up from my bench to go to one of my 3, 2 X 72 grinders usually to just touch the belt for a second. It occurred to me that if I had a small belt grinder on/near my bench that I could use just by swiveling my chair that work would go much smoother.

I have a cheap 1 X 30 somewhere, and I even have a Multi Tool on a variable speed grinder that I never use. The Chinese are advertising a small belt grinder for $60-$70 dollars that looks well built and has a variable speed motor. It looks well-built.

What I am looking for is precision, not hogging metal. It will probably never see a belt grit higher than 400. This will be used for knife repair, not making.

So, do I customize my existing 1 X 30? I do want variable speed, so I would have to convert it to a DC motor. The Multi Tool is still a little ungainly for what I want and it runs pretty fast on the slowest setting.

Does anyone make a really nice small grinder?

Worksharp with the Blade Grinding Attachment turns it into a 1x18. Variable speed and a range of belts available. I use it for small mods.

A bit bigger than you probably want, but Lee Valley sells a good quality 1x42. I was looking at those little grinders on amazon too. I might get one to try. They are not super expensive, so not a big deal if it is not very good.

I also have a couple sets of diamond files within arms reach of my main work area for touching up hardened steel.

It’s bigger than a 1x30 but vashti makes an amazing looking 2x42. You can run whatever motor you’d like with a vfd and voila.

I know that a couple years ago Travis Wuertz ,of TW-90 fame, was developing a mini grinder. You might check with him, although I know it's not in his website.

Wish something like this was available, I can see it being very handy

Nice, do you have one? Looks nifty and super cheap. Wonder what the sfpm is on each speed setting.

That seems like belts would be hard to get and the platen would need work (way too thick and wide for my uses haha)
Film at eleven Josh...I broke down and ordered one, mine is coming from the motherland, so no telling when it’ll get here. They say shipped in five days. I also see modifications happening as well. Will keep ya posted.

All these mini grinders and other tools are blowing my mind. I do a lot of work in the garage, and my grinder is in the shed. It would be awesome to have something close for small tasks.

I’m looking forward to any reviews

I found that Foredom also makes a little sander that is pretty inexpensive.
