I'm looking for a magnesium/ferro Fire starter to play around with. What's the best one on the market?

Probably the best firesteel is the Light My Fire/ Swedish Firesteel but I also love the BSA Hot Spark.
But neither have a magnesium block attached; you don't need it. Just learn about types of manmade and natural tinder.
I have also bought some homemade ferro-mag tools that work great. I don't really use tha Mag though.

I already have a fire steel and a flint and striker kit. I'm just wanting a good magnesium fire starter to add to my toy box.

Doan's is the only mag-flint I've used. It gets good reviews, including from me, taking into account I can;t compare it with others :D

I've seen the Coghlan's version around here and was tempted to get it, but I read somewhere how it isn't really durable; if you accidentally dropped one, the ferro rod would break away.

Now I've got the Doan USGI. Go get this great tool.

Coghlan's version is made by Doan. At every gun and knife show in the Portland, Or. and at many sporting goods store you can fine magnesium rods with fire steel sparkers grouved and epoxied together with both epoxied to deer or elk horn handles (or in one case the same epoxied to cedar handle or in one case epoxied to a 4 inch piece of niece FAT wood. I have many of each type. The round magnesium rods are easier to scrap shavings off.
The one that was broken in a test was dropped about 10 feet onto concrete repeatedly. I have never had one come apart in anything near normal use. Their test also broke a 4 inch 1/2 inch round solid piece of ferrosteel rod in half. tough test.

I have purchased Coughlans from my local Walmart and have never had a problem.

I have both, a couple of them made by Doan, and one made by Coghlan's. I like them both. However, I read that Doan is the best, the one in Air Force survival kits, and another brand had problems with the ferro rod detaching. I did not know (as Ron Athay mentioned in post #7) that Doan made Coghlan's version. Maybe the one that had problems detaching was some other "no name" brand. FYI the Doan brand one is available at Cabela's for $5.99. Good Luck.
