Please share any tips and tricks for dismantling a 3" XM-18 without the benefit of the Hinderer armorer's tool! I will be changing the scales on my new XM-18 on Monday and would prefer to learn NOT by my mistakes...

I've learned that the screws need 5/64" hex wrench, which is the same as the CRK Sebenza, which I have.
What do I use to hold the pivot screw that has the bump in it while I use a large flat blade screwdriver on the other side?

Any other tips? Thank You!

Typing on my phone. If you have a dremmel you can take an old our cheap
Flat blade screw driver and take a"U"cut out of the center and make your
Own spanner tool.
Pick a flat blade that is the right size to fit the width of your slot so when the"U"
gets cut it will fit nicely.

I use a #12 spanner bit for my screw driver. Bought it on the bay for a couple bucks and it works like a charm.

That "bump" is the screw.

In a pinch you can use coins to adjust your pivot. Great when your in the "field".

But, if you are just swapping one scale, one time...the coins can be used carefully to completely remove the pivot screw. A dime placed in the slot on either side of the screw's bottom (protruding thru the pivot) can stop rotation as you turn the screw via the screw's slot.

Anyone else ever notice many of my posts get bombed by ads? I know we all get hit, but darnit, it is noticeable for me fosho.

Thanks all for the great info. I will want an armorers tool eventually but with this info I'll be able to get by!
:)

You notice it because registered users (without a paid membership) see the ads and I believe the ads typically appear on the first and last post on the page. So if you make a post and it is the last one, you see an ad. As soon as the next person posts, they get the ad.

(I believe that is how it works).

It's all good. Only time it ever bugs me is when I try to post helpful photos. I go to the trouble to attempt to help, and the pics turn into miniatures. It's fine, with pinch n zoom, etc., it's not a very big deal.

One of.the things I hate about Hinderer is that there are too many accessories in my want list and my wallet is an anorexic school girl. There was a tool in the for sale.section, but obviously went fast.

Like others have said, I too go the penny route when wanting to take down the xm. Quick and easy until that armorer tool eventually comes.

I made a ghetto spanner tool from a staple remover. Took the staple remover apart and the two prongs are just about the same width as the XM pivot.

One day the stars will align & an armorers tool will be in stock, until then i just use a flat blade screw driver and my thumb.

I think the Strider and Hinderer uses the same tool. Here's what I use for my strider.... a $5 wrench I got from the bike shop. I forgot what part of the bike it's for but any bike shop will carry it. I had to grind down the middle notch to make it fit inside the pivot hole though.

EDIT: I just noticed the hinderer pivot doesn't have the hole in the middle. In that case you can just grind the middle notch off completely.

Many of us have a multi tool, small pry bar, or other pocket tool that can do the job. Look around your cubbies and keep an open mind, ideas will flow.

But I suggest keeping an eye out for the official armorer's tool if you plan to always own a Hinderer or a few. I broke down and got one even with no fewer than 4 other methods of managing my pivots. Don't ask me to spell them out, I have already mentioned coins and looking at tools you have on hand.
