Problem: I need to form a kydex sleeve to fit a HH. What methods have worked best for you? (Hair Dryer, oven What temp, Etc....)

Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks!

I use a heat gun very carefully...

If you see the kydex get 'shiny' it's ready, almost overdone
If you 'smell' plastic burning, it's overdone.

Best way I've found is to heat it slowly, holding it snug, but not too tight - so that I don't crush it when it approaches molding temp (about 325 in an oven).

Good luck!

The paint section of hardware stores carry the heat guns mentioned in the previous post. They run about $25. Once you have the heat gun you can buy kydex from sheath making companies and mold your own. Fun projects and you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

I've done some at home Kydex smelting using an industrial heat gun with a clean baking sheet as the work surface. A heat gun can be also helpful in fine tuning the final fit. After getting the Kydex limp I swap it over to a homemade press (cotton gloves!). The press is made of 2 pieces of scrap 2"x6" with 2 layers of blue camp mat foam glued in-place with spray adhesive. Put the blade down and fold over the Kydex making sure everything is lined right. Placing the second piece of my press in place I clamp it down with a couple of wood-working clamps till it cools. I’ve heard of some folks that just stand on theirs. After it all cools put in the rivets or chicago screws and trim off the excess. Be mindful of the rivets and such as to close to the mouth of the sheath can be a PITA to get in. If you decide to use a TekLok be sure and get the placement and hole spacing right. I usually put one layer of masking tape on the blade but leave the "pinch-point" for the sheath uncovered. This allows an easier draw/resheathing without sacrificing blade security. Keeps blade scratches down also. Kinfekits.com has some supplies if you need anything, I’ve also gotten stuff from Texas knife. Take care and happy smelting!

I make kydex sleeves all the time. I just cut a piece to size put it in the oven at 130-150 degrees celcius and as soon as it is soft enough, wrop it round the blade and fit to your desired fit. WEAR GLOVES!!
