My old propane model is (after only 3 years) showing serious signs of age. Plus I want a better one. While I have natural gas at the house I am guessing propane -- but I am willing to listen to suggestions. So, what does a gadget guy get? I am in Houston so we use it fairly regularly.

A few months ago I bought this Vermont Castings propane BBQ (they come in gas also) for my balcony from Home Depot. It really is an awesome, nice sized medium-sized, stainless steel, 4 burner + side burner BBQ (i.e., even heating, virtually no flame-ups, plenty of food for a family of 5 and more, good looking, porcelain coated cast iron removable grills for easy cleaning, side burner, electronic igniter like the one on your stove ,highly rated in Consumer Reports, easy to put together). About $650 + tax; add a nice cover for another $40-$50.

I have a gas fired infrared broiler in my kitchen stove. It's fantastic. So - there is a company that makes gas infrared BBQs, I'd get one of theirs....www.tecinfrared.com

Our "Aussie" brand gas grill has really held up well. I don't see them around much any more though.

I prefer a real grill that can use charcoal or wood, but wife really wanted gas. I lost the fight, but it is nice to be able to slap on a steak after work, even in the dead of winter, without having to fool around with a real fire.

Good luck on your search.

I put in a Weber Summit last year and I couldn't be happier. A friend talked me into splurging the extra money for this thing and he was absolutely right. It's all stainless. It's all heavy-duty. It's got a lifetime warranty. There is just nothing flimsy on this thing, nothing half-rate. I am totally pleased with it.

On their website, www.weber.com, they have a chart that compares the various models. One of the parameters is how many people you can cook for on each model. For mine it says, "The whole neighborhood."

Whatever you get, get one with a side burner. This is how you can literally cook the whole dinner outside.
