Best Paintball Gun for a beginner?

Without a doubt, I would have to say the Tippmann Model 98, which is now called the Model 98 Custom. It is reliable, rugged, easily upgradeable, and affordable. I have an original Model 98 that I really like but I have rarely used, and I can say nothing bad about it, except what most people say about any stock marker and that is make your first upgrade a new barrel, such as the J&J Ceramic, or one by Lapco.
Just about anyone who has ever owned or used the Model 98 reveres it. For reviews, try this http://www.pbreview.com/421/1/0/
If you decide to buy one online a good dealer is www.countypaintball.com

Thanks for the reply. A guy at work also recommended the Custom 98. I placed an order for it with a 16oz. Chromoly CO2 tank, and a 9V Viewloader hopper. I didn't order an extra barrel yet. Ceramic barrel? Wouldn't that break? I think I'll get one of those stainless steel barrels...probably from Dye. Oh, I ordered the stuff from Action Village.

Well even though you've already ordered the 98 you made the right choice. I have a Spyder Java with mini expansion chamber, modified bolt, trigger job and Dye grips...not major upgrades but the gun isn't completely stock.

My friend has a Model 98 for about as long as I've had my Spyder. The Tippman's are really tough guns. Everytime we play I always have to tear apart my Spyder to clean and lube it or else the next time I play I'll be breaking balls left and right and the gun will jam and it's just a big mess. My friend hasn't opened up his Tippman since he bought it and it still shoots like a champ, no problems whatsoever...altough replacement parts for Tippmans are expensive.

Looking back on it I should've gone with a 98 but oh well...good luck with your purchase and enjoy!

Ceramic barrel? Wouldn't that break?

Actually, the "ceramic" part of the J&J Ceramic is the ceramic/Teflon coating of the bore. It's a great barrel. You'll probably like the Dye barrel but you may find it somewhat heavy. Remember, the particular type of paint you use has everything to do with the way your marker shoots, and accuracy.

Anyone know where I can get this gun caomuflaged? Are there any companies out there that can put OD green stripes on it to break up it's outline? I've seen this on some rifles and custom knives...

The J&J Ceramic barrel and PMC Marbelizer paint are a perfect match. Great accuracy and hardly any breaks. The best prices I've found on paint have been at Paintballarmory.com with their free shipping offer. Get an expansion chamber if you're using CO2, it will make a big difference in how the gun performs. If you ever want to upgrade take a look at the AutoMag from Airgun Designs. All stainless steel and a really simple design.

Have Fun!!!

Opened the thread.
Read the first post.
Chuckled to myself and thought, “I had a Tippmann Custom 98 but that was at least 20 years ago.”
Then I’m shocked by the first reply recommending a Tippmann 98.
Then I’m not shocked when I look at the date.
