I'm in the mood for some nice new pants. These will not be worn to cocktail parties or masquerades, they are for doing manly things. I'm looking for a pair of tough pants that I can wear in the woods in the spring and fall in Michigan (wet and temps in the 40's to 70's). I will hunt, plant, fish, and frolic in these.

Some things I'm looking for:
Tough
Comfortable
Water resistant
Breathable
Warm but not hot

I'm thinking about a pair of Duluth Flex Work Pants but have never tried them on before.
I'm also thinking about a pair of Filson Whipcords, but $215 is a bit steep for a pair of pants...
Any suggestions are more than welcome!
Thanks guys.

Wool is best. Cabellas Superwash whipcord is machine washable-a nice feature. Look on eBay for Filson bargains.

It's kind of an odd suggestion, but for three seasons of the year I'm partial to Simms fly fishing pants.
They make zip off pants that convert to shorts when the weather is warm,
they also make a standard as well as a cold weather pant.
They are light weight and dry really fast when they get wet.
No loud colors.
I layer as well, so if it's really cold I wear a layer of fleece
or some of that high tech long underwear under them, treating
them like a shell.
Very comfortable trousers.

I love the Duluth flex fire hose pants. I've had a couple pair for about a year now, and they still look brand new despite giving no concern towards their care. The regular fire hose pants are good but heavier and bulkier, and the added flex does make them feel better when you're bending down, squatting, whatever.

The water resisting does wear off over time, though. Mine get damp in the knee area now, but it beads off everywhere else.

My "grail" pants, if one can have such a thing are Haglofs Rugged Mountain Pants.
..from their website...

Two front pockets, one back zippered pocket.
Two zippered side pockets with bellows, with a cell phone compartment in the right side pocket.
Reinforced knees and seat in a FlexAble™ stretch fabric to improve comfort and water-resistance.
Reinforced instep in durable polyamide fabric.
Gaiter-style hooks at the front of each cuff attach to footwear laces and seal out dirt.
One ventilation zipper at the back of each thigh.
Buckle adjustable cuffs.
Articulated knees.
Elasticated waist with button closure.
One security pocket.
Wind resistant.
UPF 40+.

Kind of like the Bear Grylls pants but less corny.
Best price is around $160 plus shipping from the UK but one of these days...

Those are like Batman's pants! A little too much gadgetry for me (vents and lace hooks etc.), but they sure are cool.

omg contacting right now thanks marcelo. How did I not know about these?

The Duluth pants are great! I have one pair I've been wearing excessively just to see if I can wear them out. They have held up to a year plus of very heavy use so far. That is around 4times longer than the carhartts I used to buy.

Those wool whipcords are fantastic as well but pricey. Cabelas used to have some produced for them that were very very good, check and see if they still have them.

Those Duluth pants don't look bad, but their "water resistance" is only going to be as long-lived as whatever they're treated with, since they're still cotton canvas.
Check out the various softshell pants offered by brand name outdoor gear companies. They're well beyond traditional materials in almost every aspect of performance.
Not a great choice if you're going to be off in the briars all the time, or plan on dancing in the fire, but besides for heavy brush-busting, I can't think of anything better.
I love the Marmot Scree, but I'm sure there are others just as good or better. I never had reason to look any further, though. Warm when it's cold, cool when it's hot, stretchy so they move with you, water and wind resistant, quick to dry when they do get wet, and extremely breathable. They're very tough in terms of normal wear and tear and abrasion, but stickers can still poke you. I have a heavily used pair, and a like new pair that are both a size larger than I need(have a smaller pair that I wear all the time now), and can barely tell the difference between them. I used to wear BDUs or Carharrts outdoors, but these are much better.

Right now I'm wearing a pair of Levi's 505 trousers, but they're made by Filson out of Tin cloth. They fit like jeans, looks like khaki Levi's, but made from a single layer of Tin cloth. So far they wear very well, are somewhat water resistant, but could be treated with a DWR? These are a bit expensive, $160, but they are Filson, and US made.

I also just ordered a pair of Arbourwear Tech pants. These have double knees, a soft nylon fabric, and one reviewer said they are better than all the other tactical pants he's owned. Many others remark as to how comfortable yet tough the fabric is. They are made for guys that work in trees, outdoors, get sweaty, dirty, etc...they run about $80.

I'd be very interested to hear about these when you get them. Those look just like what I'm looking for! I really like the way nylon breathes (when woven correctly) as compared to cotton pants...

I have the Filson wool whipcords. They are expensive of course and are well made to go along with it. My big gripe with them is they have that dress pant crease running down the front so it looks like you are going to a social event instead of the woods lol

I have a couple pair of filson double tin pants I got one pair For a dollar at a local thrift store bran new still had the can of oil in the pocket best outdoor pants out there
