Best protection for iPhone 3GS that is not Otterbox Defender?

Gonna buy a 3GS on Friday and wondering what is the slimmest protection possible while providing good resistance. I bought my mom a 3GS for Christmas and we got her a defender so she can just throw it in her purse or it can be dropped (already dropped twice hard). But since I already carry a few things for my EDC I need something that will slip in and out of my pocket. Any suggestions?

Nice belt sheath made from leather would work well too. I don;t like to carry my phone in my pocket anymore.

The otterbox commuter is great for pocket carry. I have one for my Droid phone and it works great.

I have a Speck Candy Shell, bit of rubbery resilience for bounce - hard shell outer so it slips smoothly into my pocket.

Have you tried the Defender with the belt clip? I've found that it's more comfortable on my belt that any case has ever been in my pocket.

I have an iFrogz case that has been great. May want to check them out.

Had no idea Magpul made cases though.. those are nize!

I have the Mareware "SportShell™ Convertible for iPhone 3G/3GS" and love it! Check out the smaller thumbnails below the sportsband accessory pic. It converts easily and quickly to clip/stand, smooth back, or sportsband depending on what I'm wearing/doing. Excellent tactile feel to the case and it has protected it well thru a couple of drops in the kitchen (tile floor).
