"best" quality manicure set

My girlfriend is going to do my nails so I won't have to get them done professionally every other week. She used to do this as a young girl in her mom's salon. So I need to buy a manicure set.

It is important to buy the best quality product I can afford. I've examined every hit on Google for "manicure set". The one that really stands out is a Dovo 11 piece set advertised for $379. It is fashioned entirely from stainless steel. Absolutely no plastic is used.

What experiences have the forum members had with Dovo manicure implements in general?

I have seen individual Dovo barber's and manicurist's shears at a local cutlery shop and they are very well made with painstaking attention to detail.

I am continually asking the question, why aren't items of comparable quality made in this country? We can certainly do it.

In case anyone is wondering, yes I do get my nails "painted". With clear polish like hers.

Gee...

While we're on the topic.

In your experience, what type/brand of maxi-pad have you all had the best luck with? I'm thinking Always with wings, but sometimes that's just not enough coverage...
Or, have any of you dove into the wide world of tampons?

Next up, lipstick...

That's a tad harsh isn't it?

Clippers and toe nail scissors aren't that far off topic. While I may not be in the market for a $300+ manicure set, it never hurts to know the difference in quality versus junk and various points in between.

Personal experience, here's what happens when people notice you wear orange nail polish (notice the homemade sling around the arm I didn't yet know was fractured):

Just kidding. I was drunk, got attacked by a tree, and tripped. My father didn't believe me... he still thinks I got into a bar fight.

Back when I used to paint them, I didn't do much in the way of manicuring. Just pushed the cuticle back a bit with any handy tool I had lying around, to keep the polish from looking nasty on a pile of dead skin. So yeh, I've got absolutely no good advice at all, sorry. :)

I've had a Dovo like nail clipper for a few years. It works OK. If I lost it I wouldn't replace it; the 99 cent Gems seem just as good to me.

That was harsh, I'm sorry. I couldn't resist.

No hard feelings, eh? :P

I clip my nails with the scissors on my Gerber 400 multitool. I guess I don't pay enough attention to my nails?

I dunno, I think it was kind of comical to see a post like that on bladeforums. Whatever, gadgets and gear is gadgets and gear.

I shove my fingers in her mouth and make her bite them!!!!

Manicure:rolleyes: :p

Well you ought to try it. I get compliments about my nails all the time from men and women. On the other hand my ear piercings (2 lobe, 1 cartilage) are running about 75% against.

I collect guns and have had only girlfriends. No question about it, I'm a "guy".

Ok here's a description of the Dovo 11-piece set which recently arrived.

Case: Hinged metal-framed leather case with hang tag that says "Finnish Elk".

Implements: All items made solely from finely-machined stainless steel. Few forging or machining marks. Very well finished in dull grey. Most pieces marked "Dovo" and "Solingen".

Scissors, nail
Scissors, cuticle
Nippers, cuticle
Nippers, toenail
Tweezers, slanted
Tweezers, pointed
Knife, cuticle
Knife, corn
Pusher, cuticle
Cleaner, nail
File

Note that a couple of functions are duplicated.

Bottom line: Quality may be unsurpassable, but waaay overkill. A $30 Pakistani set from a gun show is adequate for this sort of thing. But my girlfriend is impressed so I'm keeping it.

She's wants to do my hair next...

Can you post some pictures and perhaps a review after you have used the product?

well i worked in a cutlery shop for a while, dovo makes good stuff, so does henckles
