Do any of you keep a rescue knife in the car? If so, which one do you recommend? Where do you keep it? I am thinking about putting it in the center console. I am considering purchasing the spyderco assist or a benchmade ERT 1. Are there any other rescue knife/tool that has a seatbelt cutter and a glass breaker? Thanks and have a safe and happy holiday.

Personally I like my Res-Q-Me keychain
http://www.resqme.com/
Can carry it everywhere and doesn't look threating ectr.
Purely for getting out as to assiting people well I would go with the sypderco for it's design with the serrations.

Sorry for the bad grammar and spelling it is late.

im sure either of those would work fine. i know gerber gets trashed alot but here is a good one IMHO, the Hinderer, pretty cool knife had it in the car the last two years on our trips to OBX. Hell i even edc'd the damn thing for months, a beast but the serrations actually did okay with most tasks.
good luck

I carried the Spyderco Assist and I still keep it around but the ResQMe now rides on my keychain. Keep a good knife or rescue hook around but put a ResQMe on every car key chain, too. They cost less than a key. :)

I just received a Benchmade Rescue Hook 7 .I got the largest because of my work at RallyNY and may need to cut the heavy duty seatbelts they use. I also carry a large auto centerpunch. I like these because you don't have to swing it for it to break the glass.

The MOD (Masters of Defense) Dieter CQD I. A monster of a folder with carbide glass breaker and seat belt cutter.

The Victorinox Rescue Tool would be ideal IMO. It has the tools you require and other very handy items like a lockable blade, philips screwdriver, can opener and bottle opener.

I like the idea of having an effective EDC that doubles as a rescue knife. That's why I got the MOD CQD and CQD Mark II, and the Spyderco Assist. But using a knife or any other tool as an impact glassbreaker can be inconvenient or ineffective.

A spring-loaded glassbreaker seems better. A simple auto center punch from any hardware store or the ResQMe are easy to carry or to keep in the car.

Of course, if you're in the rescue business, it wouldn't hurt to have a variety of good tools available. :)

Exactly what I would suggest ! AfterDark, go HERE and review the whole presentation of this amazing tool! I think you will be impressed.

In any vehicle/ BOB, I have the Spyderco Rescue Tool. The replaceable carbide tip breaker is the primary reason I carry it. I' ve tried it on a few windshields (discarded mind you :) ). And it works! The whistle feature I don' t depend on. The serrated blunt tip blade can be a plus for cutting belts, clothing for first aid, etc. But even if you may not need nor are qualified to use these features, you can be in a situation where someone else, such as a first responder, may need one. Keep in mind that spring loaded punches are ILLEGAL to possess in some states.

In my experience people undo their seatbelt and climb out of a door, window or hatchback before the emergency services get there. If they haven't, it is because their injuries prevent it.

That said, I think it worth having a glass punch in your vehicle.
If a vehicle is on its side or roof, it may be easier to pop the glass than try to open a door/hatchback.
But I would not depend on any glass breaker that requires a swing to break the glass. Spring loaded punches are much more effective.

If you have been in a crash and can't get out of a door or side/rear window, I suggest that you are going to be too badly injured to start sawing a screen. It is difficult enough with a proper glass saw, working with plenty of space outside the vehicle.

One disadvantage of the Victorinox would be using it with gloves on. The Spyderco would be no problem at all, easy to access and to deploy.

thanks for all the replies so far. I am watching the videos for a few rescue tools recommended above. does anyone know if the resqme or other glass breakers will work if the inside of the car has a tint film covering it? I know the film might hold the shattered glass together and prevent the window from shattering properly.

It will shatter. The film might hold the shards from falling, but would be easily pushed out.
