I can't seem to find rules on fixed blade concealed knives in NYC, but would love to get an emerson fixed or folder karambit:

Fixed:

Folder:
http://www.emersonknives.com/miva/m...e=SuperKarambitBT&Category_Code=SuperKarambit

I already have an emerson commander for normal EDC, but looking for something new.

What about Home Defense? Can you get away with something bigger in your own home? Cold Steel Trailmaster?

I am a yuppie looking white guy who steers clear of trouble always. so, not the type to get arrested or cause any problems for NYPD, Thanks.

Bump.

I've found a few law descriptions, but no mention of fixed blade versus folding blade restrictions (size or otherwise). All that I seem to find is restriction against automatic and gravity knives.

Anyone know how I can find out? Or, is it that subjective that there is no written statute that addresses this issue?

Thanks

NYC Admin Code does not allow anything over 4". Fixed blades with a single edge are OK, unless they are viewed as a dagger or dirk.....Any karambit style knife will be viewed as more of a weapon design than a utility pocket knife and therefore could be considered a dangerous knife.

How are you going to defend yourself with a knife when most thugs in NYC carry guns? Knowing how to spot trouble and how to stay out of it is probably a better idea.

How is avoiding trouble incompatible with being armed and prepared? Perhaps no one should carry weapons for self defense, and we should all just spot trouble stay out of it instead?

Since cops in NYC seem determined to call every folding knife an illegal gravity knife, your best bed would probably be a fixed blade, or several, under 4", single edged, and concealed.

I would not carry a knife in NYC for self defense. If I had another reason to carry one, that is a different story.

TECHNICALLY, a gravity knife the old german paratroopers knife. You press button, point knife down, gravity pulls the blade out, let go of button and it locks. Now in NYC speak, it's any knife that springs open, flicks open, etc

Look if you really need a knife for protection in NYC that badly get a multitool.
For example the Leatherman Surge has a nice 3" one-hand opening blade and even if you are stopped and searched by the police you can plausibly claim that it's not a weapon. The LM Wave is fine too although it has a smaller blade.
And suppose you had to defend yourself. If you have only a knife it's much harder to prove to the police that you had no intent to use it as a weapon. So even though you are the victim they may still arrest you for carrying a weapon. It sucks but that's the way it is.

Wasn't NY law the genesis for the NY Special? I'm moving to Manhattan in May and I bought a Dozier NY Special from AG Russell. It's a great knife. I'm sending it back to have a belt sheath made for it.

Thats a good idea

personally id suggest the regular sized folding karambit for carry, however if your squemish as far as the laws are concerned then get yourself a benchmade snody activator

http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_type/straight/benchmade_activator_with_kydex_sheath.html

see how its unassuming?
personally im a big fan of the tried by twelve versus carried by six mentality. aweapons charge is no big deal, i think the most theyd stick you for is a misdemeanor, weigh that against being stabbed to death. personally id rather pay the fine. have you ever been jumped before?? u might be slightly less concerned with how the law will see it if youve ever really been scared for your life.

have you ever considered gun ownership?

sheez, nothing is legal in new york! i'm visiting this weekend, so i was reading through the penal code. any "dangerous knife" is illegal, and so are stun guns and pepper spray. i carry all of the above concealed, legally, in california. now i'm racking my brains trying to figure out what the heck i can legally carry for self-protection during my visit.

the multitool is a good idea, but the leatherman is way out of my price range. anyone else have any ideas for legal self-protection weapons in nyc?

I'm pretty sure that pepper spray is legal in NYC. Also, any folder under 4" that cannot be flicked open and is carried concealed is also OK in NYC.
