What is the best rescue tool to carry in your car? Seat belt cutter, window breaker, other uses? What about this one: "http://www.edarley.com/finditem.cfm?itemid=19609". Its a 5-in-1 tool called their Lifesaver. Very low 'coolness factor' but that may not be important if its the most useful. Getting Christmas presents and this idea is a good one, if I can find the right product.
Thanks in advance.

Just get a regular multi-tool, like the surge or charge, it can be used for cutting the seatbelts, smashing windows, plus it has all the other tools you may need. The only negative would be having to open the knife blade, which might be difficult in certain circumstances.

Have you smashing vehicle glass with a multi tool? I have - unsucessfully.

I now use a Res-Q-Me. I have used mine on several occasions. It is a very effective tool.

I keep a Becker BK9 on the floorboard of my CRV for such uses. Don't claim that it's the "best" for such service, but it gives me a good feeling to have it there.

You really want a spring-punch type glass breaker, in addition to whatever you use as a cutter. You can buy one of the dedicated window breakers like the Res-Q-Me or a generic spring-punch, but don't rely on a hammer-type device.

I keep a spring-punch and a Benchmade Rescue Hook in both my cars.

I saw a show on TV where they tried to use one of those 5 in 1 tools and it was worse than no help.

The only way they could even crack a window was standing out side the car and swinging as hard as they could. Even then, it took the strongest man to do it.

The seat belt cutter didn't work either.

The reason I say it was worse than no help is that it gave you a false sense of security.

I've seen cops take full blows at a side car window with a maglight or ASP and not have it break. I doubt those plastic hammers would do anything. A real hammer or center punch would work a lot better.

Like bquinlan I keep a Spring loaded center punch and a BM Rescue Hook in my cars. I have played around with both at a buddies junk yard and had excellent results. Under my seat I have an expandable tire wrench. It is just like an ASP, but has a tire wrench end. That could break windows or bones depending on my need.;)

No, I have never tried, I was just assuming it would work. So scrap my idea...:thumbdn:

What if you use the pointy pliers on a LM ? Won't that work? You get alot of pressure with those, I think.

Vehicle glass is designed to be tough - and it is.
I get to break a lot of it because I am a professional firefighter and we get scrap vehicles to train on.
I have experimented on the glass using pliers but could not break it by hitting with the points.
Your best bet with a Leatherman/Gerber/Victorinox/SOG/etc would be to throw the multi tool as hard as you could at the glass. This would be difficult from the confines of a vehicle and extremely traumatic for the people inside a vehicle if you are doing it from the outside.

A dedicated spring loaded glass punch is definately the way to go.
