Hello .

Please advise as to the best sharpening stone for knife sharpening, for years i have been using a guided system to sharpen my knives .but i want to start doing free style

Any advice

I would be sharpening 1095 stainless steel 154 cm cpm 154 a2 d2 etc.

I am looking for a stone for sharpening and fine tuning a a blade.

These will be folding knives

Thanks

I'm no expert but I would suggest diamond stones. A diamond stone will cover all of your sharpening needs. Some oil or water stones won't do a very good job on the newer steels. They aren't the cheapest way to start out but they will cover all your folding knife needs. I own the 6" DMT Dia sharp kit. It has 2 stones that are double sided (so 4 grits) plus a box/base for under a $100.

If you decide to go with individual stones, I'd suggest a coarse and fine to start out with and use an old leather belt (or find one at a thrift store) to strop your blades with.

Practice hand sharpening on some beater knives. If you don't have any beater knives get one or two from Walmart (especially one with a recurve blade in case you have or buy a recurve in the future) and maybe one or two kitchen knives from a thrift shop. Then watch some vids on youtube and practice practice practice on the beater knives.

Good luck!

If you're looking for something to take with you into the bush, the Fallkniven DC4 (diamond/ceramic) and CC4 (fine/ultra fine ceramic) are excellent.

Fallkniven also make a bench stone sized diamond/ceramic stone which is very effective.

I have the above, as well as a few Shapton ceramic water stones (1000, 2000 & 5000 grit). I usually finish on a leather and balsa strop.

Norton Oil Stone would probably cover the steels you plan on sharpening just fine. You may want to visit Shapton Pro or Glass if you want higher end water stones dependent on the budget. A good question is, What is the budget/price point? Best can be very subjective. Would recommend you post in maintenance and tinkering.

Just my humble opinion. Like Linux said, plenty more info in the maintenance and tinkering forum. You won't find a definite consensus on this topic.

for your purposes, I suggest a DMT Coarse (blue), a DMT fine (red), and an Arkansas Hard.

best system I have ever used, is the EdgePro Apex. A 'guided system', yes, but it certainly delivers the goods.
In the field, what little touch up I need is provided by a little diamond stick by EZE-LAP

I use King water stones for my Scandi grind knives, and a strop for my convex ones.
