I'm looking for a good sharpening system for under 50$ that will give my sub 4" knives a good mirror edge. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

You can get a Lansky with a few stones for that price but your technique may need some polishing to get a mirror edge.:D It depends on your definition of "mirror edge".

For a bit more than $50, you can get that mirror image you want.

Get one of the Worksharp Knife Sharpeners on Amazon, at this link

http://www.amazon.com/Work-Sharp-WS...ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1285185319&sr=8-1

for $69.95, with free shipping (if you have Amazon Prime, as I do).

Although you will be able to do a really good job with the 6000 grit belt included in the kid, if you make a leather belt for it and charge it with the green compound (chromium something or other, available at http://www.amazon.com/Green-Stainless-Steel-Polishing-Compound/dp/B0009SW592 ) you will produce a true mirror finish.

Much easier than it may seem. That Worksharp Knife Sharpener was the best $70 than I've spent over the years on many different stones, steels, carbide cutters, yada yada... If you sharpen the blade free hand, without the guide on the sharpener, it will produce a true convex edge.

As with most items you order directly from Amazon, if you don't like it, you can probably return it...

I've used the Lansky stuff before and it's worked really well for me. I haven't done anything other than touch up sharpening though.

Do you have an old grinder?Paper wheels.Even with buying a used small grinder you could get in for about $50.00 and have a professional system.

I second the sandpaper recommendation.

Otherwise, a very basic combination waterstone will run you well under 50$ and will serve you well.

That definitely looks interesting whats the max knife size and how sharp does the 6000 grit get them? I was gonna buy the sharpmaker but then I saw this.

Wow...This looks great. I am tired of my Lansky system. I am gonna try it. What are the degrees of the pre set angles guides??

Max knife size? Hmmm... last night I sharpened a large kitchen knife that looks something like the picture below, and it did just fine. How sharp does the 6000 get? RAZOR sharp... shaving sharp.... hair popping sharp.... good enough? :D

Here's the pic:
