I want to get a Stainless Steel water bottle. I have looked at all the brands and like Kleen Kanteen the best. My questions is, what is the best all around size you guys use ??? I was looking at the 18oz, but since its not much bigger than a can of pop, I think its a little small. The 27oz might be more to my liking. I am thinking the 40oz might be too big. I wanna get a maxpedition pack ( not sure which one yet ) and plan on carrying it with it. I want a plain stainless one incase I ever have to boil water in it. Also, do you prefer the old milk bottle style, or the wide mouth ??? So far, I have been thinking the 27oz wide mouth would be the best all around since it would be easier to get inside and clean without any special brushes. Let me know what you guys think !!!

Got a widemouth 18 oz Klean Kanteen a couple months ago because it fits just perfectly in my Maxpedition Fatboy. It's not a bad size, but if you're going to be using it for long hikes it's a bit small. For short hikes and every-day carry, I think it is a very useful and handy size. The wide mouth is much nicer on a Klean Kanteen.

I've been using my 40 ounce Klean Kanteen for a couple of years now. I can't do with out it. I go through about 60 ounces of water a day. I drink a lot of water. When I was in undergrad, 40 ounce was almost not enough for the entire day at school. I prefer the milk bottle style. Less drippage. lol

EDIT: As far as cleaning is concerned. I just use a bristled brush to clean where the mouth thins out. I am pretty gentle with it because I don't want to dent the metal. After I clean the neck of it, I squirt a few drops of soap in the bottle, add a bit of hot water, and then just shake the bottle with the cap on tightly. I find that cleans it pretty well. After wards I just rinse it in cool water. The cap I just clean with a regular brush.

I was thinking the widemouth would be a better all-around. I am looking hard at the 18oz and want to get a maxpedition also, one of their smaller packs. Then I was thinking the 27oz might be better. It will be more for shorter jaunts and everyday. The 40oz is way too big. So I am down to the 18oz OR 27oz. Considering a can of pop is only 12 oz, the 18oz might work okay. Since there is such a small price difference beween the 18oz and 27oz, thats why I thought the 27oz might be the way to go

I concur the wide mouth is most versatile. A filter can attach to it and it is easier to fill and pour. Plus the wide mouth allows the Steripen to work in it if needed.

I went with the 40 oz as it is closer to one liter and I can meter it out better for cooking etc. It is a big hurky thing but it is worth the trade-off for wild work. For going to school or daily activities I can see going with a smaller size for daily urban drinking etc.

I much prefer the widemouth, and usually carry a 27 oz. Even though it's taller than the 18, it's the same profile vertically, so it will fit vertically in a bag just fine. Either is great, though.

Water purification tablets (micropur) are sized for 1 liter. Are the 27 oz bottles "close enough" or is the difference a concern?

27 small mouth

It's easier to drink from and fits in their bike cages.

The small mouth is better for drinking out of if say you are driving, because it won't slosh and splash you, the bigger is better for about everything else and it mates to my msr filter. The 27 oz wide mouth is about the same height as the 18 so why not go with the bigger size.

I'd get the 27 oz for anything except hiking. 40oz for hiking.

go for the widemouth 40, it is nice to have room when boiling and you can cook and eat ramen out of the thing. You won't fit 2 cups of water and Ichiban in a 27oz.

The 40 oz will also nest in the same cups that a standard 32 oz nalgene bottle will. It fits with just a bit of wiggle room in a Snowpeak ti mug.

I got two of the 27s and one 40. Both are awesome. I prefer 40 for the field. IMO anytime you can carry more water the better within reason.

Edit: I just looked at Klean Kanteen's site.... they got a 64 ounce bottle. I gotta get me two of those for my Maxpedition 12X5 Bottle Holders.

Hey, not to hijack the thread but do those Steripen things really work? What kind fo UV light is it using? Will any UV light work. I got an Inova X5 UV light. I'm considering getting one of these.

I find the 27oz model to be the best balance between convenience and capacity. When I'm hiking, I usually just carry a 1L plastic nalgene as well as my stainless bottle to get the capacity I want

I've been carrying the 800ml standard mouth for a while and have no issues with it. I can see an advantage to the wide mouth, but at that point I'd just get the guyot (sp?) 1 liter that matches the size and shape of a nalgene
