So, I'm just got back from camping and I somehow left my SAS survival handbook somewhere back at camp. So, I'm off looking for a new survival guide. Hopefully something small, portable and contains info about plants. Any suggestions? Thanks!

My suggestion is to ask in the wilderness section or ask a mod to move this there, youll get many more answers.

The first thing you need to tell us is where you live.

Different skills for those living in mountains, desert. forested, plains, rain forest. etc.

I would like something for living in forested areas and winter climate survival as well as urban areas for my BoB. I'm willing to buy more books if necessary.

Thanks for the responses. I'll be sure to check them out. Have you guys used the AF 64-4? I heard it was a better guide than the Army's.

98.6 degrees by Cody Ludin. Great no nonsense book. None of the crap about building shelters and traps. Couple that with a wild edibles guide for your AO

I agree with BOTH of the above two... Mors Kochanski and Cody Lundin's books are the best. I like Cody's better but they are both fantastic.

Another highly underrated book, which isn't technically a survival manual but can and will save your butt, is Finding Your Way Without Map of Compass by Harold Gatty.

As Wild Mike said the book six ways in and twelve ways out. If you do not have that manuel in your survival libary you are truly missing out.

Do you want a manual for surviving a few days until rescued, or a wilderness living manual?

Pocket Gem of the SAS Survival Manual. We have 5 between the four of us in the house and I have three normal sized versions, and a jumbo version from god knows where. There's also a SAS Urban manual as well, Don't know if that comes in a Pocket Gem size though.

Surviving a few days would be nice. If you know of a title about living in the wilderness, I guess I could use that for my bug out bag.

98.6% The Art Of Keeping Your Ass Alive" by Cody Lundin
Stay Alive! by John D. McCann

Would be hard to say which of the two is the better one.

Bushcraft by Mors Kochanski (should be required reading in school IMO) :)
Primitive Wilderness Living & Survival Skills: Naked into the Wilderness by John McPherson and Geri McPherson

It really depends on if you want an actual short term "survival" book for getting out of an unexpected wilderness situation, or a primitive living skills book. They are two related, but mostly different things altogether. But Cody's book and Mors' book would definitely be at the top of my list.
